Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • NV Ulysse Collin Champagne Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut (2013) Les Maillons 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Lovely blanc de noirs. A nice blend of rich was and freshness, very young, needs some age, lemon, brioche, medium finish. 92
Day 2: Bubbles are gone (it was open all during dinner), but it's still a very nice still wine.

  • 2011 Franz Hirtzberger Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Honivogl 88 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Moderately aromatic, white fruit, a little waxy; full bodied, high density, medium-plus acidity. I don’t drink a lot of gruner because it can be a bit rich for me, but it’s nice. 88-89

  • 2008 Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Light ruby, significant bricking; highly aromatic, floral, red fruit, forest mulch, slight Brett; palate is light, fresh red berries, some youthful tannin, high acid; medium finish. This is really lovely, though the nose smells like a wine 10 years older than it’s age. Still, a lovely wine. 91-92

  • 2005 Littorai Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Gorgeous nose with red fruit, allspice; palate is light, red fruit, simpler than the nose; finish short-medium. The nose was very promising, but the palate was a bit short and lacking in fruit, seemed like it was past its peak. 89

  • 1999 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Highly aromatic, meaty black pepper, black fruit, some fresh minerals; palate is medium bodied, fresh medium-plus acidity, balanced mature black fruit; medium-long finish. This is a superb fully mature Cote rôtie with excellent balance, great wine with food. 94
Fades just a bit in the glass with air.

  • 1989 Château Beychevelle 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Moderately aromatic, dusty cigar smoke, mature fruit but still present, nice density on the nose; medium bodied, again nice plush texture and density, balanced black fruit, medium integrated acidity, perfectly integrated tannins; medium to medium-plus finish. A well balanced, well made, classical St. Julien with the concentration of a good year, at a good stage of maturity. Very nice. 91-92

  • 1989 Château Suduiraut 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Moderately aromatic with apricot, some minerality; palate is fresh, medium sweetness, a bit simple; medium finish. One of the better bottles that I’ve had, but still relatively simple. 85

  • 1975 Château Coutet Barsac 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Cork removed with Durand easily. Golden-orange, no hint of copper so light for its age; moderately aromatic, honey, minerals, orange peel; medium bodied, nice core of acidity and freshness, orange blossom, twang of tartness in the midpalate (which is nice) which transitions to just a bit of bitterness and grapefruit rind; finish is medium length with more pith than fruit. The palate is better than the nose, fresh and interesting, and certainly enjoyable. A thoughtful sauternes, at maturity but still has time ahead. Hasn't changed since my last taste in 2010. 92
Day 2: Just as good. This has held up nicely and likely still has a decade or more of life ahead, though drinking at maturity now.
