Introduction

People gathered at our home. Brandon, Rae, Michael, Clare, Brian, Monica, Christie and I were present. Food catered by Zoe's Kitchen which included steak and chicken kebobs with roasted vegetables, tumeric rice and supplemented by baked ruby trout. Starter with the Bellwether riesling while everyone was coming in. Then sat down with food and taste the rest of the wines.

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2016 Bellwether Wine Cellars Riesling "S" 89 Points

    USA, New York, Finger Lakes

Tart apples, mild citrus, hint of honeysuckle with some minerals. Nice cut and weight. Lacks some concentration and wished for greater minerality. Crisp and delicious on this hot day.

  • 1998 Domaine Huet Vouvray Pétillant Brut 93 Points

France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray Pétillant

Really interesting how this wine evolved through the night. Opened for 2 hrs and kept in ice bucket before serving. Amazingly youthful with brioche, tart apples, citrus, minerals and wet wool, and a bit of grapefruit pith bitterness. Excellent acids and very lively. We were surprised and none of us would have guessed that this was 20 yrs old if blinded. However, after about 1.5 more and as the wine warmed, prominent honeysuckle and a mild oxidative nuttiness emerges and permeates through the palate, revealing the wine's maturity. The mineral and acid spine was still present, but in a more rounded form. Excellent!

  • 2016 Skouras Moschofilero Salto 89 Points

    Greece, Peloponnisos, Nemea

Pale crystalline color. Lots of jasmine aromas with more flowers, and stone fruits. Palate had barely ripe stone fruits with some more jasmine and minerals finishing with a nice citrus pith bitterness. Not the most complex wine but just really crisp, enjoyable wine for a hot day.

  • 2015 Domaine Les Poëte Reuilly Blanc Orphée 87 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Reuilly

Interesting wine - creamy mouthfeel with a medium body, ripe apples, some minerals, herbs, with just enough acids to keep this from being flabby. 2 hrs later as it warmed - get more tropical fruits (mango, guava, maybe some unripe pineapples). Lacked any grassy notes that signal more typical sauvignon blancs.

  • 2014 Francois Carillon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St. Jean 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Opened for 1 h and cooled in ice bucket. Salt, apples, herbs, really nice minerals and a hint of amaretto. Excellent depth, concentration, and density of flavors on the palate. Very enjoyable.

  • 2008 Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Golden yellow. Opened for 1 hr and cooled in ice bucket. Petrol, ripe apples, pineapples, herbs and minerals. Not flabby but definitely didn't have the laser-like focus and cut on the palate. Odd, since 2008 is supposed to be a high acid vintage from what I've read.

  • 2013 Dario Princic Bianco Trebez 90 Points

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT

Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Chardonnay - Fruili, Italy on the border with Slovenia - organic farming practices, ambient yeasts, no temperature control, minimal sulfur at bottling - orange wine. Golden copper color. Apples, citrus, tea, herbs, small amount of dry cider and moderate tannins on finish. Nice balance and definitely showed its best with food. Liked this.

  • 1999 Kalin Cellars Pinot Noir Cuvée DD 89 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Cloudy brick color. Mild volatile acids with tart red cherries, sous bois, and hints of brown leaves and earth expressed in a lithe frame. Excellent acids. Not for everyone but I liked this.

  • 2004 Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir Bailey's Branciforte Ridge

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Santa Cruz Mountains, CA - Stood up for several weeks and decanted off fine sediment 2 hrs and poured back into bottle. Wine was completely shut down for a good 2-2.5 hrs yielding very little except for acid and dirt. When it did finally begin opening up, dense concentrated dark berry fruit with pine, forest floor earth, minerals, hints of sous bois and some tannins. Dense mouthfeel with good acids. I think this is still shut down and this is a hint of what might be come. Probably wouldn't touch another one for 5 years. 14.2% abv which is pretty high for this bottling but reflects the heat spike at harvest.

  • 2015 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Baking spices on the nose with fresh, lifted red cherries. Palate has really pretty cherry fruit, some earth, and baking spices. Elegantly framed with good acids to keep the wine lively. Liked this.

  • 2015 El Viejo Almacén Garnacha Huaso de Sauzal

    Chile, Secano Interior

Made in non-interventionist manner with no sulfur added. Interesting wine. Creamy blueberry, cinnamon and other bakings spices, brown sugar, and mild chocolate aromas. Palate had more red berries but otherwise similar to the nose. Would not have guessed this as grenache if served blind. On day 2 with left over wine, more bright red berries, herbs and some earth, less prominent baking spices, no chocolate and a leaner profile that is more reminiscent of grenache. Really interesting transformation.

  • 1968 Krohn Porto Colheita 93 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Opened for 4 hr before serving. Intense, heady brown sugar, sweet dried fruit, baking spices and floral aromas. Palate is similar with a medium body and good acids that match the richness of the flavors and lift the wine. I like this.
