Booth One - Chicago IL

Fun dinner with each flight containing an equal number of bottles of Burgundy and New World Chardonnay. Very educational.
OK, wines were supposed to all be 2010 and younger, but who has time to read emailed instructions?
Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Rich and nicely mature with ripe apple and some stone fruit, but a well structured core and a good minerally finish. Best when first poured, certainly more tired when revisited 2 hours later. I correctly identified this as Old World.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Nicely floral start with subtle spice alongside apple and pear with moderate ripeness and lots of finesse. In its peak drinking window. Correctly identified as Old World.

Badly oxidized. I was able to correctly identify this (double blind) as a New World Chardonnay.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Apple and lemon aromas and flavors that was surprisingly fresh for its age. Good weight and length that still retains bright acidity, but without a sense of mineral on textures. Correctly identified as New World.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Great aromatic start with rich stone and orchard fruit and spice aplenty. Palate is similar but so much riper, seemingly less balanced and thereby less enjoyable. Spice on the palate comes across as so new oak driven. Warm finish. Probably better with another year or two in the cellar, but not long-term because of the heat, so 2019- 2023 or so. Correctly identified as New World.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Moderately ripe orchard fruit with lots of energy and good textures. Very good length. Incorrectly thought this was from Burgundy.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Moderately ripe orchard fruit with slightly sweet spice and a bit oaky to start. Incorrectly identified as New World as we initially went through the flight, but an hour later this lengthened and harmonized, coming across as more classically Burgundy.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Easily the class of the flight. Ripe peach and baked apple with apple pie spice. Very rich and slightly toasty, but finishing strong and long with great textures. Correctly identified as Burgundy.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Bright and tense with lots of energy. Good weight, already showing lots of complexity. Entering its peak drinking window this younger, this should be charming for the next decade+. Correctly identified as from Burgundy.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. An odd wine I just did not enjoy tonight. Ripe and one dimensional. I was so surprised this was from Burgundy.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. This was so reductive that it was impossible to fairly assess., even after pouring from glass-to-glass 10 times and giving this 30 minutes. Clearly rich and dense with good length, but little pleasure coming through tonight.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Good ripeness with enough bright acidity for overall balance and good+ length, even if nothing particularly complex here. Much better vs another bottle from a few weeks ago. Correctly identified as from New World.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Another odd bottle. Clearly very ripe, seemingly not quite integrated. Rich start through middle, but a short finish that almost seemed bitter.

Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Yellow and green apple with Meyer lemon, ginger and saline. Starts out strong, finishes even stronger. Upside from here. I incorrectly thought this was from Burgundy.

Baked apple, dried apricot with vanilla and sweet spice. Good+ weight and length, with just slight hints of complexity. Good+ now with a long life going forward.

1999 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 90 Points
France, Champagne
Mature combination of ripe apple and berry hints. Seems slightly more Pinot Noir vs Chardonnay in both flavors and textures. Good+ length.
