Just delicious, displaying the tension between bright acidity and ripe fruit which is so typical for 2016 in (broadly speaking) Northwestern Europe, perfect weight and intensity, touch of salted butter, playful and long.

This wine really divided opinion tonight. Some enjoyed it, some found it so primary that they asked whether it could actually be called wine, and others found it actively unpleasant. But it certainly stimulated discussion!

Two bottles opened. Rather unsettled nose (some of the participants suspected TCA), good earth and iron Nuits character on the palate, but overall not a convincing showing. The Forey 2012’s seem to be behaving like spotty adolescents tonight.

Two bottles opened. The first displayed an unidentifiable unevenness, but the second, although clean, is also uncommunicative and there is little or no Vosne character. It may need more time? Judgment suspended, provisional (conservative) score.

Hardly any evolution in the colour, concentrated, bursting with vitality, firm tannins but with sufficient fruit for balance, hint of nutty evolution, good flavours and length. Remarkable power for Chambolle and for 2004, but more about energy than about finesse. Will last, but I doubt that it will evolve much. Drink now - 2024?

Two bottles opened. An acceptable burgundy, but a big disapppointment after the previous two excellent bottles. The first bottle is more vegetal than the second, but both lack expression on the nose, and weight of fruit on the palate. Impeccable provenance, so these issues must be intrinsic to the wine rather than attributable to these two individual bottles.

Two bottles opened and double decanted, both identical and in my opinion both off. The nose seems volatile initially, but closer inspection reveals traces of carbon dioxide in the wine, probably owing to continued malolactic in bottle.

Two bottles opened. The first seemed a bit old and tired immediately after opening, but has recharged its batteries on the second day. The apple and citrus flavours are fresh, carried by lovely Eiswein acidity, but the bitters are considerable and the residual sugar has been consumed almost entirely. The second bottle had a musty nose, but a delicately sweet palate, fresh and harmonious, peach and spiced apple, gentle bitters, retains its line and length.
