Single bottle. Decanted for two hours to soften the tannins. Unsurprisingly, more evolved than the two magnums tasted previously, but still a solid performance. Overall it is quite a big and cedary wine, glowing with chestnutty warmth, but also with bright Cabernet-Sauvignon freshness and lively tannins, hints of chocolate, and a dry but fragrant finish.

A fascinating contrast with last night's 1988. Where that was all ripe, sweet cassis and Left Bank Bordeaux aromas, this was distinctly Northern Rhone at first, even though the proportion of "Syra" in the blend is rather small. (The label says it's 70% Cab Sauv and the rest split between Malbec, Merlot, Syra, Cab Franc, Pinot and Tannat.) There was a strong liver-iron component to the nose, violets to add lift, underpinned by mushroom and leaf mould. The Cab Sauv eventually came through, with a remarkably pure impression of blackcurrant leaf, but overall this seemed much more tertiary than the '88, which revealed a wider array of secondary fruit aromas. Still, this was also excellent, a little lower in acidity in the mouth, but with a nice compact mouthfeel and an attractive finish. 12.7% ABV.

Tasted blind. This turned out to be the pirate, very well brought in to this tasting because it was very hard to identify this as the pirate wine. Drinks just like a mature claret!

Mas de Daumas Gassac Tasting and Dinner (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): Magnum. A warm harvest, start and stop between 3 and 20 September. Mature and complete, harmonious and generous, beautifully melted but still firm tannins, meaty aromas, completely ready even from this grand format.

VinoLaprisco Tasting (Restaurant De Karpendonkse Hoeve *, Eindhoven, Netherlands): From a pristine magnum. Like a beautifully mature claret, with a dash of Languedoc ripeness and warmth. Has style, class and a remarkable vitality.
