Introduction

I want to choose three 1996 Bordeaux from Haut Medoc to compare, blind, with three Australian Cabernets of the same vintage. This exercise was to choose the, ahh, participants from Francais...

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1996 Château La Lagune

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin. Initially slightly ripe blackcurrant with leather, slightly smoky notes as well as baked earth, red cherry and plum. On the palate it's freshly juicy, tannins near resolved, more red fruit than black here with a touch of alcohol warmth. Yum.

  • 1996 Château Patache d'Aux Médoc

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc

From Coravin. Slight coffee, a little toasted blackcurrant, mint, cream, some floral notes, some black plum, biscuit, leather. Chalky with a very slightly damp cellar underpin. Juicy, savoury with warm baked biscuit and plum, long, tannins resolved. Nice.

  • 1996 Château Haut-Marbuzet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

From Coravin. Woody spices, earth, warm brick and red berry and cherry fruit, leather and a little farmyard. More of the same on the palate; predominant spice is clove for me, some mid palate burr, a little tomato leaf, ridiculously long with a little warmth. lovely.

  • 1996 Château Maucaillou

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

From Coravin. Red currant and blackcurrant, charcuterie, leather, slightly medicinal with muted wax polish, smoke. Surprisingly tannic and drying on the palate which dominates the red fruits. Finishes quite spicy. Hmm.

  • 1996 Château Poujeaux Flawed

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

From Coravin. Dirty, a little damp cellar, stinky, biscuit, plum and berry, wet undergrowth. Sour, sharp; quite pointy, lacks fruit, some tannic burr. Following my earlier note I think this probably is flawed & will mark it as such. Having said that as both of these tastings have been from Coravin so I'll keep the bottle and give it a proper decant and see what happens....

Closing

With the very first sniff of the very first wine I was in happy Bordeaux land again. This was a pleasing exercise accepting the pity of Poujeaux and my victims have been selected…
