Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2015 Domaine Anne-Marie Gille Nuits St. Georges Les Brulées Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

Vines planted from 1924-1999 in clay and limestone soils, "Les Brulées" (1 ha 21 ares 27) has a SE orientation & is located S. of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Typically, "After 6 days of cold maceration, fermentation starts naturally without external yeast addition, or temperature control. Maturation lasts 18 mos in fine texture, medium toasted, oak barrels (1/3 new)."

N: At least an earthines, POSS cork taint?

P: LM body; NICE frt met by a "sharpness" leading me to believe at least SOME degree of TCA, so won't score.

  • 2015 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Cuvée Mont des Oiseaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Note: Putting together info from several sources, my understanding is that this is the 1st vintage of what USED to be called Le Petit Arlot, a section of replanted vines in the 1er Cru Clos L'Arlot monople which, in their 15th yr, have now once again requalified as 1er Cru. We should all give the Domaine kudos for renaming the parcel rather than merely [legally] ADDING it to the production of their more expensive Clos de L'Arlot bottling.

N: Barnyd, but LOTS of other stuff ALSO going on. (budosyu noted cranberry & pomegranate with air.)

P: LM body; Rndish entry with NICE frt met by some astringent pucker, but without losing touch with the frt as it pretty much resolves by the LONG, BALANCED finish with a delightful tangy/swtness to the very, VERY fine tannins. DESERVES through '20, then likely making its 10th. My EXC. 16 & 16.5/20 Jancis Robinson. [I didn't see another listing with which to compare this vendor's $69.95.]

Note: A more positive TN than my samplings on 7/8/2017 & 8/18/2018.

  • 2015 Joseph Drouhin Savigny-lès-Beaune

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

    Grapes from the domaine (planted on 2 hills with two different exposures, north & south), in addition to grapes & must purchased from regular supply partners (long-term contracts), all grown in soils featuring a complex mixture of limestone pebbles, red or yellow clay, & other small stones. [Yields are around 20% < allowed by law.] Aged in FR oak barrels (10% new) for 12-15 mos;

N: Some barnyd, which blows to smoke & cherries

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE frt met by some astringent pucker which evolves into a LONG, pleasant finish with a tangy/swtness to the very, VERY fine tannins. Deserves another 6-12 mos, then drinking for 3 yrs more? My VG-/EXC-. [While competitive cf'd to wine-searcher's LIMITED postings, they currently list 1 source @ $3 < this vendor's $35.95.]

Note: The MOST advanced of my 3 tastings of this.

  • 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Hauts Pruliers

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

"This parcel of 46 ares consists of a kind of terrace on a steep slope, in mid slope (275m). The shallow ground of brown-limestone, consists of gravel, clayey silts, on hard limestone. The 40 year old vines are of sufficient age to produce balanced & concentrated grapes."

N: Toast & smoke atop blk rasps? With air, coconut?

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE frt met by astringent pucker which transitions into a LONG finish with a tangy/swtness to the very, VERY fine tannins. DESERVES through '19, then drinking for 4 yrs more? My EXC-. [I saw no other prices with which to compare this vendor's $66.95.]

  • 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Nuits St. Georges Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

"The parcel of Lavières, at an altitude of 250m, is slightly sloped. Its calcareous colluvial ground at the foot of the slope is of rather deep and stony, clayey-muddy soil. The vinestocks are between 20 & 35 years old. The vines at the origin of our Nuits Saint Georges Vieilles Vignes (Old Vines), located at an altitude of 245m, grow on a shallow alluvial cone, calcareous & stony, at the bottom of the slope. On the whole, the field consists of 2.45 ha in appellation Nuits Saint Georges."

N: CLOSED; Toast/smoke atop berries? Intensity lurking?

P: LM body; Rndish entry with NICE, almost swtish frt fairly quickly met by astringent pucker which morphs into a LONG finish with a tangy/swtness to the very, VERY fine tannins. Deserves/NEEDS through '20, then drinking for 4 yrs more? Nicely done! My EXC-/EXC. [I could find no other U.S. source with which to compare this vendor's $48.95.]

  • 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Vosne-Romanée Village

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

"Resulting from several parcels representing 1.90 ha, one of these is gently sloped to an altitude of 250 m, in ground of rather deep silt on clay, with vines from 35-55 yrs old. The other part, 25 yrs old, comes from a parcel on the top of the slope (300 with 325m), which is steeply sloping, on humus-bearing black soil, gravelo-stony, very calcareous. The bottom is him also calcareous & stony."

N: Toast/smoke, berries WAY underneath? Intensity lurking?

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt fairly quickly met by an astringent pucker which evolves into a LONG, still very VERY slightly puckerish, very, VERY slightly bitterish finish with a swtness to the very, VERY fine tanins. On the verge of, if not in fact, overextracted. NEEDS through '21 to POSS come together. IF so, my VG+/EXC- will be WAY low. 16.5/20 Jancis Robinson. [As of mid Jan '19, this vendor's $62.95 was an amazing $15 < wine-searcher's only offering!]

Closing

I purchased several of the '15 Rions, QUITE loving my 1st exposure to that producer. However, IMHO the '16 Rions tended towards overmanipulation (largely with respect to oak), + they seemed universally > expensive than the '15s. :(
