Fairly muted nose. The palate is definitely more interesting here, with lots of weight and a little bit of waxiness. Seems a bit heady, but as far as viognier goes, there's quite a lot of acidity to keep it in check. With air, the fruit got fatter and sweeter, while the waxiness and acidity didn't seem to change relative to each other. But at the end of the day, this is a good wine but it's certainly not worth the (now) very high tariff, at least to me. Perhaps it is still more a piece of vinous trivia...
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Fantastic white burgundy -- hits all the spots. The nose is luscious and generous with fruit, but it is not overly ripe. In fact, there's a nice acidic cut on the nose already. The palate is just fresh and juicy, and there's a rich intensity here that is also a slight bit waxy (not anywhere close to the Grillet though). Great mineral and acid backbone. Typical 2014: i.e. great.
I mean, at this point, what do you want me to say? Yeah, this has always been a pretty good cuvee of gamay, but at the end of the day, it's still gamay, so there's only so much you can do with it. The nose is quite pretty, with a nice sweet red fruit profile, which carries through on the palate. However, there's still that typical saccharine sweetness of gamay that I can't get past.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Definitely a serious grand cru quality wine, with some really nice heft overall. Red fruit and some really lovely intensity overall, there's something that definitely seems quite Morey to me. The midpalate is a little headier than I would have expected, and the finish seems to show a little bit more charred oak than I would like, with some slightly unpleasant bitterness.
Initially this is a really pleasant and juicy wine, with a lovely herbal tone and some really pure red fruit both on the nose and the attack. It's on the finish where this wine drops off a bit -- seems to be quite astringent and maybe even showing some bitter (and unnecessary) oak?
I really like the nose here -- the juicy gamay seems to pick up some heft thanks to the pinot. The palate is definitely a bit thinner, but there's a really pleasant juicy quality to this. It's not profound wine, but eminently drinkable bistro Burgundy.
Blood, meat, iron, rust, iodine, all that good stuff in a bottle with a terrible label that was 95% falling off. There's no mistaking the Hermitage on this bottle -- it's about as classic and correct as it comes. Still a generous helping of fruit as well to balance out all these feral syrah elements. Better than my previous bottle of this -- this seemed fresher and cleaner, and there was an awesome vibrant streak of acidity here too.
