  • 2016 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bianco Toscana IGT 96 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

The ‘16 Bianco was hard to put down, as a display of rich exotic florals flooded the senses, followed by zesty citrus, ripe peach, wet stone, hints of woodland funk and dusty minerals. On the palate, I found soft, almost-oily textures, with savory stone fruits, salty minerality, spicy yellow citrus and yellow inner florals. Pliant yet poised, it finished medium in length, with a zing of spicy citrus, lingering mouthwatering acids, minerals, and dried apricot. Wow!

The nose was rich, showing roasted hazelnut, ripened brie, lime citrus and hints of green apple. On the palate, soft textures gave way to a sweet yet also quite dry expression, as young stone fruits, and inner florals created an elegant display. The nose was rich and exotic, showing spiced peaches, yellow floral perfumes, and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, I found soft textures, which coated the textures in an almost-oily film, as notes of savory peach, spice, minerals and lime oil blanketed the senses, offset by juicy acidity. Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • 2016 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 96 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

The ‘16 Ornellaia lifts from the glass with a bouquet of blue florals, giving way to savory spice, a mix of red and blueberry fruit, smoky minerals and dusty dried flowers. On the palate, I found silky textures balanced by brisk acidity, ushering in mineral-encased raspberry fruit, with savory spices contrasting sweet, creamy liquid violet and fine tannin, which slowly mounted. The finish was long and spicy, with tannins up front and saturating red fruits and minerals resonating throughout. Wow, totally classic with so much tension and poise.

  • 2015 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

The nose showed crushed raspberry with hints of savory herbs, dark spices, and smoky hints of bell pepper. On the palate, I found silky, pliant textures, showing zesty red berry fruits and spice with a mix of minerals, acid and tannin that created a youthful and ungiving persona. The finish was long, displaying a coating of inner floral tones across the senses, saturating fine tannin and echoes of blue fruit. The early appeal that was found after it had just been bottled has pulled back, revealing a wine in need of time slumbering in the cellar. I can’t wait for it to wake up once again.

  • 2014 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

The nose on the ‘14 Ornellaia was restrained at first, taking time in the glass to emerge; yet once it did, what a beautiful display. Here I found rich, dark fruits with hints of undergrowth, crushed stone, smoke, tobacco and peppery herbs, in a cool-toned, almost northern Rhone-ish display. On the palate, I found deep, soft textures with an almost-juicy persona, as tart wild berries, minerals and amassing inner florals built, all kept fresh through vibrant acidity. The finish was long, resonating on dark berry fruits with a twang of zest acids and lingering fine tannin. This is a dark and moody wine for sure--and I like it.

  • 2013 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

The ‘13 Ornellaia was showing more red fruit than the other vintages in the flight, with a mix of raspberry and cranberry, as sweet spices and red floral tones developed in the glass. On the palate, I found a soft expression contrasted by juicy acidity, giving way to ripe red fruits, sweet spice and inner floral tones. The finish was medium in length, as tannin came on late among lingering red and blue fruits with a hint of licorice. The gentle nature of the ‘13 makes it stand out from its peers, and it’s very easy to like already, yet I wonder how it will mature in the cellar.
