Introduction

My first visit to the spanish capital for more than 20 years.

A lot of things have chanced: not throwing all your papers on the bar floor, really hard to find a Churro BAr, more tourists than ever......., but only in the center and near the sight seeing points.

A really good Metro system with at this moment 10 lines...., and still improving.

And what I like best: Madrid is ONE whole tapas and wine bar! ;-)

Flight 1 - Day One: Iberia and Cuenllas (13 Notes)

At first some more or less calm wines which did not impressed me.
At Cuenllas some courses of spanish dishes, 8- 10+? or so paired with some really fine wines from all great european wine nations!

Flight 2 - At the La MaMa (1 Note)

Found this restaurant in the Guia Michelin 2019 for Spain, recommended with a BIB Gourmand.
So we had fine tasty food for a very reasonable price tag!

  • 2014 Bodegas Fariña Toro 75 Anniversario

    Spain, Castilla y León, Toro

    (4/25/2019)

A decision not well made by me, one of this superconcentrated new world spanish wines, 14,5% ABV, a basket full of ripe or overripe black fruit, dense, with some silky tannin, lacking terroir, long but a little boring, not a good pairing with fine food, a 100% tinta de toro aka tempranillo, really?

Flight 3 - La Tasqueria (3 Notes)

Awarded a first Michelin Star this year, chosed this location because of the young team, the bistro like atmosphere and the focus on meat and fish!
Best Mondongo I ever had!
And delicious as delicious can be a fried piglet head! ;-)

  • NV Michel Gonet Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (4/26/2019)

Never heard of this small producer before, but if you are curious like a small child and you are offered this one for about 40€ in a Michelin Star restaurant, yes, pnp, immediatly, very young appearance, fresh, no refreshing, mouthfilling mousse, some brioche, really vibrating on the midpalate, would put some bottles in my cellar and wait at least 3- 5+ years, great stuff, recommended, **(*-****-?)

  • 2018 Bodegas Forjas del Salnes Rías Baixas Leirana

    Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

    (4/26/2019)

Again, never heard of this producer before, very tasty with a good flow on the midpalate, flowered, very elegant though, quite mineralic, some supporting acid, good but unspectacular......., **

  • NV Agustí Torelló Roca (AT Roca) Penedès Brut Reserva

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

    (4/26/2019)

Forgot to take a foto of this one, maybe it was an Extra Brut, the palate you know?
Why do I describe a bottle not served at our table, a scene you can often watch at some tables in restaurants, a couple, dinks for sure, are not satisfied with their choice and treat the service with their impatient annoyance, complaint about having tasted TCA, I watched the scene for some time, the two waiters were not convinced, but in well lead houses customer is costumer and its will will be respected!
Very well made CAva, but I asked for a glass of this specific bottle......., no way TCA, bonedry to the neck, getting nearly a shock....., and this said as a bonedry Riesling LOver!
This bottle was mouthwatering and animating to have some more fine food! Again a for me faily unknown producer, recommended! *(**-?)

Flight 4 - A la taberna Palo Cortado (11 Notes)

We met for a spanish almuerzo, lasting about 4 hours......, how many dishes, you never know, but some of them to kneel down for!
Thanks to the team of Paci!

  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier 93 Points

    France, Champagne

    (4/27/2019)

And now, a substantial almuerzo with my Madrid wine friend Harley1199: he brought this one from his own cellar, like me he put things away for a while, even a NV Champagne from the recommended Producers, and it is to be said: great! Nothing else! very silky on the midpalate, balanced as balanced can be, superb endurance, a bottle to take a bath in, ****+ -?

  • 2017 Weingut am Stein Würzburger Silvaner Trocken

    Germany, Franken

    (4/27/2019)

I did send some Si(Y)lvaner bottles to Madrid cause I do not want to kill spaniards......., some of them are not used to for example Nahe GG bonedry Riesling, so choosed some more velvety grape with lesser acid, but as most of the fine Silvaner are from the soil of lacustrine limestone, they are quite mineralic too,
this one, a VDP.Ortswein is a good example for this, dry, animating, mineralic, some pears, food friendly, *(*+?)

  • 2017 Weingut am Stein Randersackerer Sonnenstuhl Silvaner Trocken

    Germany, Franken

    (4/27/2019)

Next VDP.Ortswein from Randersacker, a village with a history of 1200 years of winemaking, more creamy then the Würzburger, again lots of chalky aromas, a german wine, well paired with fine tapas, *(*)

  • 2017 Weingut am Stein Würzburger Stein Silvaner Erste Lage

    Germany, Franken

    (4/27/2019)

A VDP. 1.Lage, very too young, today needs food, tight, dense, a little unapproachable, but overall a really mineralic food wine, ending long with supporting acid, *(**-***)

  • 2017 Weltner Rödelseer Küchenmeister Sylvaner Großes Gewächs

    Germany, Franken

    (4/27/2019)

Next VDP.1.Lage bottling, wild as Silvaner can be, floral, a little cesty, chalky mineralic from the in Franken always dominating lacustrine soil, a little unbalanced that young, but again very good with tapas! *(*-***)

  • 2017 Weltner Iphöfer Julius-Echter-Berg Sylvaner Erste Lage

    Germany, Franken

    (4/27/2019)

Last of this far too young Sylvaner tasting, thanks again to Paci for the in my opinion very fine spanish dishes, I am still dreaming of.......,
and as a conclusion, Silvaner works well with spanish food, why not plant some at Galicia? ;-)
a Lot of creamy flow on the palate, although this one is still very too young, Julius-Echter-Berg in my opinion is often a little more open young than some compared bottlings from Würzburg or Rödelsee, but this is only my admittedly honest opinion, and I am not an expert for Silvaner..........., long finish, recommended, *(*-***)

    (4/27/2019)

Thanks again to Harley1199 to share such a great example of Bordeaux with the crowd, masculin, but ALWAYS on the elegant side of this, old school style, graphit, carbon, some meaty hints, savoury blackberry, very long, still improving, top bottle ***(*-?)

  • 1973 Bodegas Toro Albala Don PX Cosecha Vieja 95 Points

    Spain, Andalucía, Montilla-Moriles

    (4/27/2019)

And now: some spanish speciality, a small bottle of 200ml from the Pedro Ximenez grape from again....., tata, limestone soil, about 17% ABV, but the feeling on the palate...., concentrated mousse au chocolate, nutty, the description CREAMY is getting another demension, genious! ****(*), 94, 95(+) potential

  • NV Bodegas Tradición Brandy de Jerez Brandy "Gold"

    Spain, Andalucía, Brandy de Jerez

    (4/27/2019)

First I have to admit that I am not a lover of spirits, but this one, bottle number 289 from 800, great to finish this 10(+?) course menu, agded in sherry casks, when tried a recommended Whiskey, this one is more likely for me, maybe its the additional adding of the sweetness, who knows, great bottle, but again, spirits is not mine....

  • NV Bodegas Tradición Brandy de Jerez Brandy "Platinum"

    Spain, Andalucía, Brandy de Jerez

    (4/27/2019)

This one is more creamy and more in style of a wine than spirits, chocolate, nuts, caramel, well made, but again spirits are .........
