Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2008 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut

    France, Champagne

Soft nose, brioche, citrus, delicate mousse. Hugely concentrated, laser sharp acidity, citrus taste. What is most impressive is the enormous length, this Cristal stays singing around in your mouth for minutes.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Degorgement Feb 2014. Impressive Carelles. Nose Selosses trade mark oxidative tones, taste combination of very precise Chardonnay citrus tones and secundary oxidative tones. So much balance in this wine.

  • 2012 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Expressive wine, some reduction in nose, which to my opinion only makes it better. Taste very fresh, citrus, lots of depth and complexity, some nuttiness, smoke, green tea, iodine and saline. Great backbone of acidity. Magical wine, one of the better Coche’s that I have drunk.

  • 2014 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Wow, typical perrieres in nose and taste, all about focus, concentration and laser like minerality. Starts with citrus, minerals and acidity, it spreads out in many layers with long finish. Comtes lafon is so good in the last years.

  • 2013 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Sometimes you can instantly determine in the nose whether you have a Batard, Chevalier or Bienvenus Batard. Well, this wine does not give a clue to its terroir. Just a lovely grand cru Burgundy, huge wine, lots of concentration, depth, long finish; still a bit young but already so rewarding.

  • 2008 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Opened up the bottle in advance, but did not decant. A bit dissapointing, was expecting a very expressive nose, but this is only giving dark fruit. In taste lots of structure, again dark fruit, also restricted. Slowly opens in glass, showing more and more diverse tones, but never a wow moment. I think this needs more time in bottle and was opened too early. Maybe we should have decanted. Or was this just a bad bottle? Someone else at the table thought that this is what 2008 is and that it will not get better.

  • 2010 Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Typical Bachelet nose, fruit with a hint of greenness, I love these Bachelet noses. Taste lots of fruit and concentration, spice, a bit rustique, long finish. Already 9 years old, lovely Charmes. Great to drink now, I think it will develop further in bottle but I am not certain.

  • 2012 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Richebourg

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

I used to think that it was a crime to drink these wines early, but this again shows that it is not. Very expressive, spicy nose and taste, velvety, layered and complex. Medium concentration but huge finish. Lovely.

  • 2009 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Most Rayas I have had so far were Burgundy kind of wines. This is different, really CdP, los of spice, fruit, chocolate, sweetness. A bit volatile at first, but this resolves in the glass. At first I thought it was still young and a bit out of balance. However in combination with food the wine improved and found balance, really became a great wine.

Very clean and focused, stone fruit, lemon, low alcohol. Lovely finish of an amazing evening.
