Tasting with Eric and Marianne de Bruijn, who have recently become the Dutch importers of Pol Roger Champagne. It’s a marvellous NV, complex and polished, richly flavoured but elegant, stylish in every respect. A firm favourite “chez Auerbach”.
Marries the tight and citric character of the variety with the generosity and the creamy texture of the warm vintage, balanced and harmonious, aromatic green herbs, hint of earth, stony minerality, elegant (12% ABV) but with good intensity and length.
Solid Bordeaux blanc, complete and to the point. Ripe fruit with a tropical lining, vegetal notes, well integrated oak, good intensity and length. Everything in place.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Elegant, steely, intense and precise. The location of the vineyard high up on the hill shows. Extremely young and quite closed at present, but with very good potential.
Sixty year old Palomino Fino vines from the La Platera del Pago Miraflores vineyard, biodynamic viticulture, whole bunch pressing, fermented and aged for nine months on the lees in 4 year old Sherry butts. Cloudy. Intense nose, slightly funky, minerals and ripe grapes, flowers and yeast; the palate has a lovely, rounded freshness, juicy and supple, nice bitters, hint of meaty reduction; tight and fresh finish, citrus, very good persistence. Flowing as gently across the palate as the Guadalqivir through Andalucia, with effortless ease. Two great names have affixed their seal to this and the result is hugely interesting. But this quality has its price...
Cool and fresh, pure and well defined, minerally and quite tight even in this warm vintage. Great sense of place - beautifully made but not a charmer. Holds up very well on the second day, softens nicely and develops a note of bitter orange. Needs a few years.
Old vines and it shows. Concentrated and intense but light, red cherry, peach and green apple - undoubtedly Morgon. Smoky minerality, grippy skin tannins, youthful energy, juicy but linear, clean as a whistle, very good length. This will go on for 10-15 years with effortless ease. Lots of upward potential.
Vin nature, no added sulphur, a rarity in Bordeaux. Pure and aerien, ripe cherries and warm spices, harmonious and relaxed, energetic and fresh, juicy but firm, grippy but gentle tannins, ripe vegetal notes, no noticeable oak, very good length.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Elegant, subtle oak, silky, creamy lemon, intense but weightless, steely freshness, flowing and relaxed, excellent persistence on the complex finish. Remarkable finesse, more Pucelles than Folatières.
Amazing finesse and harmony, magical precision, so elegant and layered, silky and supple, earth and crushed red berries, hints of spicy oak and vanilla, early tertiary development, effortlessly flowing, excellent length. Pomerol at its finest. Marvellous.
Very impressive, concentrated, great depth and expression, spices and earth and undergrowth, quite elegant for its alcoholic weight (15% ABV), floral elegance, lovely depth, fresh and flowing, long.
