Introduction

The wines were tasted blind.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 1974 Château Montrose 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

The bouquet is not really refined, but there is some (red) fruit, oak and alcohol. There is a lot of acidity, but the wine is quite thin and cannot handle it. Altogether very mediocre and too acidic. I have tasted much better wines of this vintage.

  • 1974 Château Gazin Pomerol 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Dark garnet red. Beautiful bouquet which is even still a bit locked. There are still some red and dark berries, licorice and well integrated oak. On the palate red currants and a firm amount of acidity and tannin. Also licorice. Overall a beautiful and still powerful wine, especially considering the vintage. Great effort!

  • 1974 Château Cos d'Estournel Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Heavily corked. Nothing to taste. Pity!!

  • 1974 Château Haut-Brion 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Fairly dark garnet red. Beautiful and luxurious, refined bouquet with vanilla. On the palate finesse with well integrated oak, creamy and round, soft tannin with still a pleasant bite. Beautiful and complex, refined wine with a good length. Lacks a bit in concentration.

  • 1982 Château Bel-Air (Domaines Martin) 77 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Purple red. Creamy and fruity bouquet. Beautifully round with friendly and soft tannin. Full bodied. A very commercial wine. (Nothing wrong with that.) It is all very smooth and does not have challenging acidity or complexity.

  • 1979 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark purple red. Expressive bouquet with cassis and oak; creamy and complex. In the taste cassis, soft as well as sticky tannin and some liquorice. Very good wine.

  • 1977 Château Palmer 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Creamy bouquet; probably from the oak. The tannin is not impressive; too acidic. On the other hand it is sticky. A pleasant but strange wine. A lot of nuances but on the other hand the acidity is too dominating. Don’t know what to think. (This was a blind note. I always score the wines on each separate component, but in the 80’s and part of the 90’s I summarised these notes and threw away the original forms. This score is probably based on the complexity/refinement on one hand and the overdose of acidity on the other.)
