Introduction

Vertical tasting of the '14, '15 and '16 Sassicaia.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2017 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto Toscana IGT 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Started with this to wet the palate before moving onto to the vertical tasting of the '14, '15 & '16 Sassicaia (no detailed notes, going off of scents and flavors that were memorable).

Aromas of soft and spiced earth and bright red fruits like raspberries. Flavors of dark fruits, soft spice and some medicinal herb notes which was new to me.. it's different but not in a bad way. Smooth and light texture that was enjoyable. Nothing much else to say but I don't mean that in a negative way.

  • 2014 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

Vertical tasting of '14, '15 & '16 Sassicaia (no detailed notes, going off of scents and flavors that were memorable).

Aromas of soft, mossy forest floor, faint red fruits, leather and some a slight barn funk. Flavors of dark fruits, similar earth but darker, slight brett or similar barn notes from the nose and a soft spice. Seemed to be a lighter than the '15 and '16 on the palate but smoother. Give it some time in the glass as it showed a little more when compared to tasting it served right out of the bottle. If you like aged wine flavors, I'm estimating at least 2-3 more years of bottle age and it should show more. Take that with a grain of salt though.. again, I don't feel like 5 years of bottle age can even be considered old but there are flavors that seem to show signs of aging.. or it may be bottle variation.

  • 2015 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 96 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

Vertical tasting of '14, '15 & '16 Sassicaia (no detailed notes, going off of scents and flavors that were memorable).

Wine of the night. Aromas of dark earth, dark fruits and a soft spice. This showed a lot better than my previous experience of this bottle and more in-line to the first few times I had this a year ago (probably bottle variation for the previous tasting note). Bold flavors of dark and dense red and black fruits and deep earth. The oak and spice is more subtle compared to the '14 and '16. This was good straight from the bottle and became slightly better with time in the glass. The texture and feel of this on the palate is richer and denser than '14 and '16. It's also more well put together and presented itself a lot better than the other two. A good reminder as to why I purchased these in the first place. A pleasure to enjoy now if you ask me but I usually like them young.

  • 2016 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 94 Points

Vertical tasting of '14, '15 & '16 Sassicaia (no detailed notes, going off of scents and flavors that were memorable).

Aromas of a dense, humid forest, a good dose of sour oak/tobacco notes but bearable and dark red fruits. Flavors of dark and vivid, juicy red fruits that's almost prickly. You can feel the youth of this wine on the palate.. there's this rush of intense energy that comes off that almost seems to be vibrating on the palate (imagine a strong, vibrating liquid where the vibrations are constantly kicking up small cone-like columns and droplets). I was told that this was scored 100 points but I don't really see it (then again, I'm not a professional). I know I like young wines but even this may be too young for me. Give this at at least another 4-5 years and it should start to come together more.
