Wolfgang's NYC on 41st
Tasted Monday, October 14, 2019 by walkerjfw with 147 views
From Matt's cellar, served blind for a guess at origin and vintage. Most of us got Napa and old school (hint of BdX) , but not specific vintage.
Medium ruby garnet, some cloudiness, separating at the rim. Nose showing dark fruits and faint vanilla oak. Palate was dusted red fruits, dark cherry, black raspberry, black tea and baking spice. On the mid palate there is a nice bramble fruit and some tartness. Medium weight and finish.
Well past its prime but still fun to drink. Reminder of the great wines Silver Oak made at one point. Should hold at this level for a bit but no reason to wait...

Second wine of the evening, had been open about an hour when we drank it.
Medium ruby color, cloudy. Expressive nose, red berry, minerals green notes on the nose. Palate showing faded raspberry, mild baking spice, minerals. Medium weight, medium/short finish.
Nice enough, would drink in coming few years. Starting to fade

Generous contribution from Matt. My first time with this wine, have known about it and love the 83 vintage in Margaux. Great opportunity to drink a well stored bottle. Decanted and drank over 30 minutes.
Medium, faded ruby color. Nose of red berries, rose petal. Palate showing dusted cherry, Mexican chocolate (yes this was a descriptor...:) based on richness of the flavor), and a pronounced spice/cinnamon. Medium weight and finish.
Great opportunity to drink a well stored bottle. Unique flavor profile and a big hit with the crew on this evening. Elegant, in a tertiary phase. Would drink up

Third flight of the evening, drank next to a 2012 Grgich Hills (not a fair fight). Wine had been open for about an hour, drank over the balance of the evening. This dinner was a good excuse to check in on this wine again. Clean cork, bottle well preserved
Dark garnet color, no separation. Like my last bottle, nose jumps out of the glass, Bdx-like with redcurrant, licorice, graphite. On the palate black cherry, plums, cedar, tobacco, minerals and spice. Lush and deep palate, great secondary notes. Dusty and fined tannins. Full body, long and nuanced finish.
Spectacular showing on this night, #1 or #2 for most of the group. A reminder why Ridge MB is one of the greatest American wines...Drinking really well now but no signs of slowing down. Should drink at this level for another 10+ years

From the list at Wolfgang's. Decanted, drank next to the 97 Ridge Monte Bello (not a fair comparison...) First bottle of Grgich in a while
Dark, opaque ruby/purple color. Dark fruits on the nose. Plate showing dark cherry, blackberry, earth notes. Smooth texture, tannins soft. Medium/full body, long finish.
Pleasantly surprised, drinking well. Napa 2012 is pretty accessible now and may be at its best over the next 5-7 years, this one I think consistent with that profile.

Last wine of the evening, generous contribution from Paolo. Have had Voerzio's wines but first experience with this one. Decanted, open maybe 2 hours before drinking - could probably have used more time but great nonetheless. Drank with our "Cheese course" at the end of the evening*
Dark ruby color, vibrant core, no separation. Perfumed and elegant nose of red fruits. Fruit forward palate showing black raspberry, sweet earth notes. A slight sweetness on the mid palate, really pleasant. Medium weight, long and nuanced finish.
This wine was truly spectacular on this evening. Early in its evolution, its drinking well at this point with a long arc ahead of it. Will have to look for some to add to my cellar. Tied for WOTN with the 97 Monte Bello
*Asking for a cheese course at a steak house can be confusing to them. After some back and forth, we wound up with 2 slices of cheescake to pair with this wine....:) wine was so good it didn't matter

First wine of the evening, generous contribution from Mark. Chilled, open for about 20 minutes before the first pour. It was really tight at that point so we let it rest a bit and revisited - great decision
Pale yellow-green color. Nose showing orchard fruits, crushed stones, lemon/lime. Palate showing apples, crushed stone, oyster shell, lychee(?), orange zest. Elegant and expressive wine, medium body and finish.
Still early in its development, great now but this wine will go a very long time if wanting to cellar (IMO). Air time is a must, final glass at the end of the evening (3 hours in..) was spectacular. Would decant a minimum of one hour if venue allows
