Introduction

Great friends in a lovely environment. New traditions for the non-Americans.

Flight 1 - The night before (2 Notes)

Friends gather and catch up. Flan.

  • 2013 Domaine Alain Chavy Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

From magnum. Perfectly balanced, richness with energy, vanilla caramel custard with grilled nuts and lemon zest. All enjoyed, all immediately ordered more.

  • 2014 Andreas Shiraz

South Africa, Coastal Region, Paarl, Wellington

From magnum, short decant. I approached this with a little trepidation but it was a bright, appealing, accessible SA Shiraz with good fruit and spice, enough body to stand up to quite richly-flavoured food but not too heavy to finish off by itself afterwards. Good.

Flight 2 - Champagne tasting aperitif (3 Notes)

Flight 3 - Getting ready for the main event (1 Note)

Flight 4 - Thanksgiving dinner (1 Note)

Turkey and redcurrant, roast potatoes carrots parsnips, breadcrumbs, gravy, cheeseboard, you name it.

  • 2018 Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland

From magnum. Short decant. 68% Syrah, 13% Grenache, 9% Cinsault, 8% Cab Sav, 1% Vigonier. Deep and dark, spice and earth and a twist of bitterness. More structured than the Andreas Shiraz with which we compared it. Good with Thanksgiving turkey + trimmings.
