Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • NV Cloudy Bay Pelorus (Brut) 87 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

As always, a beautiful sparkling wine, with plenty of ripeness, vanilla, oaky complexity and layered balance. Certainly a "worked" wine, the Pelorus delivers a complex personality that does not feel like Champagne, bu absolute delivers in the mouth.

  • 2008 Grosset Riesling Springvale Watervale 94 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale

Last botte, best bottle. Perfect equilibrium. Gorgeous aged character, with noticeable kerosine notes. Opulent fruit, limey acids, supple texture, great presence. Complex, engaging, and delicious.

  • 2006 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Spätlese 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Drunk after an outstanding dry Riesling fro the Clare Valley, this gorgeous wine was equally riveting. Very opulent, sweet and suave. Velvet texture, honey, creme brûlée , lime, apple and pear. Classic German acid balance (which, to be fair, might not be quite enough to balance the sugar), with its characteristic zingyness. At this point in time , the wine feels like it its in early to mid-maturity. There is no hint of a lessening of intensity or a tailing off in character.

  • 2005 Château Léoville Poyferré 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Absolutely textbook St. Julien from a great vintage. There is no reason to defer gratification with this bottle, although it is only just entering early maturity. Incredibly meaty, and intense. Dark, dark currant fruits, with a rich and deep leathery/smokiy complexity that lifts this wine far beyond the basic fruit and oak amalgamation of basic bordeaux. Thick and ripe tannins frame a wine cos considerable dimension, but the balance is pure class. Will be fabulous to follow over the coming decades. Grand wine. 97+

  • 2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Classic Beaucastel that is entering its prime drinking window, where the transparency of the terroir reveals itself. A bright vintage for Beaucastel with a wonderful clarity of expression. Classic game, tree bark and provencal herbs mingle with undergrowth, leather and brett. Very tannic (although not in the thick manner of the 2005 Leoville Poyferre tasted earlier), but also beautifully refined (in its unique style). Tasted after an exquisite Bordeaux from a great vintage, this was not at all embarrassed. Certainly on elf thereat wines of France. Will continue to develop beautifully.
