Coming up to 20 years old, and still so young primary. It's a sensational wine that is drinking fantastically, but I'll try and hold off on my remaining bottle for 5 years or so as it is not going downhill for many years, and some further years could see further complexity added.
Primarily red fruits on nose. Palate delivers on the promise, with leather also coming through. Still so powerful, yet everything in perfect balance with a lovely streak of acidity running through it. Quite brilliant length.
Slow O'd from mid-afternoon before taking to the restaurant.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The bouquet seemed to leap from the glass and was in the lighter end of the red fruit spectrum, with strawberry prominent. In the mouth, it was almost ethereal with a sense of lightness I've not come across in a wine before, and yet it had a density and power as well. Length went on and on.
My first experience with Rayas, and it will haunt me...
1999 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Not rated as whilst there didn't appear to be much wrong with this bottle, it came across as a flat or lifeless.
