From a magnum donated from the Bonneau du Martray cellars. There’s a touch of honey development to the aroma. It has ripe peach and citrus fruit flavours. Theer’s some flesh and decent mineral cut. It is linear and very long.

A good showing today. The nose was very expressive; full of white flowers, vanilla oak, yellow orchard fruits and honey yoghurt. Quite regal and generous in dishing out the oak. In the mouth it’s lean and mineral driven which is uncharacteristic of Corton Charlie, rather, reminded me more of a Puligny, less the acidity.. The age again hardly shows. All in all this probably isn’t a mind blowing rendition of what they are capable of, but still is rather lovely.

I stay with my score and state "DRINK NOW!" This wine is losing the battle in the bottle. This wine is actually past its prime. I noticed that Wine Searcher has this priced over $600 per bottle, I would pass.

Did I miss something? My bottle, and perhaps I probably should not have shaken it before pouring (LOL), is lacking. This wine has passed it's prime, so much I am considering using it for cooking. I do store my wine correctly and know the life span of the chardonnay grape (which I think is part of the problem here). So if you have some of this wine DRNK NOW (or use for cooking).

Popped and poured. This needs 30 minutes of air to come together. Lemon rind, seashells and white flowers on the nose. The wine is lipid but adds complexity with air. Fairly full bodied, retaining good fruit concentration while also being nicely balanced.

Popped and poured. This took 10-20min to come around. Then it’s quite compelling. Still not over the hill, but mature. Lemon, tropical fruit, beautifully integrated oak, a little jagged on the edges.

Medium yellow color. Relaxed and soft now, notes of citronella and lime, layers of of fruit, minerals and spices. Rich, oily texture, good acidity. Very complex wine, mature. A treat.

All of the ex-Domaine 1999 Bonneau du Martray Cotton Charlemagne have not disappointed any of us. Consistently fresh and a tad reductive with rich and flavoursome white tropical fruits and citrus with a hint of acacia. Full bodied with adequate acidity. Even though it’s brilliantly fresh and not showing much signs of ageing, I would drink the remaining bottles in the next few years to avoid it developing into a top-heavy wine. Luscious. (90/100)

My experience was pretty much ditto of what Chekib M wrote on 10/8. Not for everyone at this stage, but depth and length that were really enjoyable. Surprising acidity still, which gave it good structure. Coincidentally, I also had it with sea scallops and steamed cauliflower (not planned), and it was a great match. It definitely benefited from at least an hour of breathing or decanting.

Brilliant freshness from first taste, light golden colour, with a lemon and white flower smell, chalky mouthfeel with integrated oak throughout that has the slightest sweet taste that flickers near the end of the long finish. Very special.

Very deep golden color that made me worry. Nose was quite oxidised, made me even more worried. Still, behind the oxidised nose, it was relatively intense and quite complex and developed with baked apples and pineapple, some vanilla pods and tea leaves aromas. It’s full body, medium acidity, dry, silky, less oxidised than on the nose. It coats the mouth with sweet wonderful flavours of ripe baked fruits. It’s so much balanced with different layers unearthing one after the other. Extremely long. It had less exotics fruits than a 1996 I had last year, but still a great wine. We had it with pan fried scallops and cauliflower purée and it was wonderful match.

This time I decanted the bottle and left for aeration a couple of hours. The wine was singing. Deep golden yellow color, very dense texture to the wine. Nose dominated by rocks, golden yellow apples and butter. On the palate very fat entry, went very well with pate de foie gras, very lucious and a buttery long finish with good lift and minerality. Wine is at full maturity but is not in decline. Delicious.

Popped and poured. Needs twenty minutes to comes to life. Light golden, mature but not over the hill, fairly open knit, decent acidity. Lemon rind, citrus, stone fruit, biscuit come through along with a little bit of autumn leaves. Overall this is in quite good shape but it’s not the best version of this wine I have had.

Deep golden yellow color. Best bottle from a total of 6 purchased last year with one bottle remaining. Nose of perfumed butter, marzipan, yellow apples. Fat and dense entry on the palate, very good tension still on the wine, jasmine, mineral and mature yellow fruits, paired extremely well with saffron scallop risotto. Finishes fat and rich.
Golden yellow color. Opened up with time in the glass to a nose of red apples, stones and jasmine. Paired very well with white truffles buttered pasta as it was fat and buttery on the palate with a decent amount of acidity left and a good finish. Not sure how much mileage this vintage has but a great food pairing wine in my book.

Tasted over two days - and what a treat of a wine. Complete with plenty of fruit, fine citrus, abundance of minerals, layered wine - keeps going. On day 2 freshness prevails. Peaking, I think, but no hurry. From PB

Beautiful golden yellow color. Nose of yellow apples, butterscotch and jasmines intermingled with rocks. Fat entry on the palate, very buttery, quite present mid palate and a nice gratifying finish. Excellent with fatty fish or fettuccine.

A fantastic bottle, absolutely top class showing. I just read some of the recent notes here on this wine and I understand that there is a lot of bottle variation. I got lucky, this bottle was great. Although it was continuing to change, maybe improving, even after 2.5 hours open, this wine was delicious and ready to go upon opening. Expansive and rich aromatically, and also airy, fresh, and bright. A wonderful nose that showed fruit - peaches and apricots, citrus - but it was better than this, more complex. There was a very strong mineral streak, and some savory notes too. Seamless and round, and very fresh. This carries over onto the palate which shows the richness and lush fruit of this terroir, and also is entirely and completely balanced with acid and mineral. Great mid-palate density, and a finish that has real pungency. I didn't want it to end. A true grand cru experience.

Ex-domaine bottle. This bottle barely showed signs of its age, a generous bouquet of oily white orchard fruits, ripe and juicy lemon and mild white flowers. Full-bodied with nutty texture and adequate acidity. Drink now to 2045. (91/100)

Burgundy Tasting (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Glass: Schott Zwiesel Burgundy / Riedel Vinum Burgundy Bottle opened before tasting, no decant. Pale amber color. Developing nose with some oxidative and musty notes, mellow apple, spices. On the palate a bit less powerful than the Raphet. Dry, some melone, some mature notes, elegant, good pressure, medium+ length. Gets better with time and air, so be patient. At its peak. 91-92+

~6-7 of the 12 bottles I had were premoxed. 1-2 more were questionable. This last bottle is very good now, tasted with my Coravin, I will open the bottle soon to enjoy it. Good if a bit muted nose as always on this one, the palate is at its best now, with good balance of acidity, oak and fruit. 92.

@Peter with T (Charlottenlund): Wonderful wine - and lovely to see it again. It has certainly survived the trip from the States; here is both body, a vibrant minerality, a solid fruit, complexity and length. No signs of aging, but the drinking window is open. When Corton is good, it is out of this world. @Peter

Note: I use a rating scale for which 85 represents a very good wine.
Unfortunately, not as enjoyable as the previous bottle 3.5 years ago. Even with some extended breathing (2 + hrs) not that full and rich. Maybe the "house style" is crisper and sharper than I prefer. Oh well, it's only money.

Slightly past its prime and likely to descend pretty rapidly. Had notes of almond on initial pour that never truly dissipated and became more noticeably oxidized as time passed. Had this wine 4 years ago and it was dramatically better. That said, it still had some nice body and acidity with some decent earthy and stone flavors. Glad it is my last bottle. Drink up!

My last of a 4 pack. Decided to go with this based on the '99 pre-mod issues with BdM. I got lucky as all 4 bottles were delicious and not advanced.. It's a shame as this is a classy wine with clear breed. Very light pale straw with green tinge. Citrus and crushed flowers. Beautiful but years away from maturity.

A whiff of oxidation on opening but blew off. Hearty yellow-gold color. Crisp acidity with hints of honeydew melon and lemon, with mildest touch of oak on finish.
Finally one without premox!
ETA: Spoke too soon . . . oxidation came on quickly with exposure to air. Staved off the worst by drinking quickly. I'll leave the original score as a reference to what this could be.

Bud's 70th at Ortega Fish Shack (Ortega Fish Shack, Wellington, New Zealand): Fresh and youthful - this is a complex, mineral driven wine with extraordinary poise and power. Only had 10 minutes of waiting before we had it as we were short on time. As I said before, with this wine we always have excuses why it is not perfect. This time it was a nice bottle, nice nose of pair, very full bodied but probably needed more time (3-5 years or 2 hours). Disappointing, again. Drink now-2020? score: 88-92.

Probably needed a little more time to breathe than I gave it (which was hardly anything). Although perfectly fine, the last glass was much better (richer, fuller, etc) than the first. No oxidization whatsoever. I will wait a bit for the next one, and let it breathe (or even decant) for at least an hour.

Boys weekend at the Cabin. This was poured into a clean bottle about 6 hrs prior to consumption and in retrospect more air would have been beneficial. Surprisingly delicate aromatics for the vintage, very clean no premox. Slight hibiscus aromas, must & white pepper. Vervey and sneaky in it's unasuming personality. Better the next night -this can age for many more years. Give it another few years.

From magnum. Nose really shows lots of age with musty character and advanced orchard fruit. Palate is much less advanced, with reasonably balanced flavors of apple and pear, along with background spice. Certainly not oxidized, but certainly oxidizing faster than other bottles of this same wine that I've had before. Tasting as approximately an 88 point wine tonight.

Like the Grillet, this wine needed a few hours to blossom and express itself and there is plenty to like here. A racy wine, more sturdy and manly compared to Chassagne/Puligny, with a nice mineral expression along with nutty flavors and lime. At 12 years of age, this is still very young. Wonderful.

Sunday Night: Martray Vertical and Echezeaux 1999 Horizontal (Sepia - Chicago IL): Ripe fruit from first sniff with peach and roasted nuts. Same profile on palate with lots of fat. I'd have liked to see a bit more acidity tonight, but this was one of the better bottles of 99 Martray CC I've tasted over the past few years (in the US). Drinking really well tonight but it's still showing its age and i wouldn't be seeking to cellar this much longer.

I'm done with aged white burgundy. When it's good, it's great. Unfortunately, tons of them are oxidized. Given the fact that the good ones cost upwards of $50, I can't justify buying anymore. I am just not rich enough to flush my money down the toilet. Damn you white burgundy.

Light golden colour with some greean and orange reflexes. The nose is very mineral with cruched stones and smoke. Also toast, almonds and other assorted nuts and a nice fruit mixed with notes of honeysuckle. On the palate the wine blooms into a cascade of flowery, rosted and nutty notes, mixed with citrus. The stony minerals are there, the acid is still fresh, the mouthfeels big and a bit oily. Exqusite balance ang good lenght. good development over the two hours it took to empty the bottle.
A fantastic wine! I fall completely for the nuts, the minerals and the generous but still fresh mouthfeel. If there is anything missing, one could perhaps wish for more fruit.

After two indifferent bottles (one too young, the other one deviant), finally a stellar performance from Bonneau's Charlie. I concur with Remington Norman's appraisal of the wine: the nose is fresh and aromatic (apple and lime) with secondary flavours, mouthfeel is opulent and round, full bodied and the memorable finish is long with a nutty recall. No oxydative character at all: the iron fist in the velvet glove. Superb!

Opened at the end of a perfect NYC spring weekend which included dinner in Westport, tennis lessons for the kids, art in Brooklyn, the new park on the Williamsburg waterfront and then Sunday at the Bronx Zoo with the kids. After first opening, the alcohol sticks out a bit too much. I also wonder whether this wine is a touch oxidized, as there is a sherry note amidst the nutty palate. This is not as clean and as fresh as a bottle I had at Apiary in August '09. After a few hours of air, the wine is much better, the alcohol recedes, the palate is better integrated, and some impressive and interesting salinity emerges, leading to a palate with good energy . . . this wine has now woken up. Still, the last bottle was cleaner and, I think, better. This particular bottle may have shown better when it was younger. A birthday present from Michel.

Must admit I had somewhat high expectations for this wine. Not often I drink a Corton-Charlemagne from a great grower. So I opened the wine and poured it into a decanter. Pale straw, hmm, this is young. Tight, restrained nose of green fruit, citrus and steel. Tastes like a Grand Cru Chablis; almost painfully citrusy with green fruit, a steely minerality, sea salt but also a touch a butterscotch/almonds. This wine is incredibly young and edgy and requires many more years to round-off. Very long finish. No change on day 2. Still youthful with a high acidity and a very mineral profile, perhaps with a more buttery/creamy texture. Needs time in the cellar. Excellent.

Rich and powerful, in the mouth the wine is thick and concentrated. But the nose is somewhat monolithic, dominated by butterscotch aromas noted by another taster and the mouth is a tad heavy, lacking some minerality to give it momentum. Long finish, but found a bit lacking in complexity.

Good but not up to expectations. Lots of honey, lemon rind. Very good wine but didn't reach the highs that you would hope for and didn't display as much minerality or strength as I like in Corton Charlemagne. Lately bottles of 01 Girardin, 02 Bouchard and 02 Boillot have all been much better.

Kitchen Tasting Group Does Beaver Creek – Day Two: My second time with this wine, and this seemed a bit off to me. The nose offers mineral and hazelnut but also seemed slightly oxidized. The weight and fruit concentration are definitely lighter than I would have expected. However, this is still very nice with great balance -- even some acidity poking through -- and a nice finish. Probably not a perfect bottle, but still enjoyable. Would have paired better with the scallops if it had a bit more weight/fruit.

Wow, this wine was slow to develop and was actually at its peak 3 days after opening after being left in the fridge. Has that classic Corton flavor of slightly oxidized minerals with caramel and it finishes with a wonderful nuttyness that became more prevalent as the wine opened up. Clearly needs more time but this is classic Corton Charlemagne. 91+

Light gold color. Rich, somewhat tight aromas of butterscotch, anise, with ample minerality, complexity and verve. Minerals and honeyed yellow fruits on the long finish.

Just slightly more than half of this was bottle was consumed, so I took the remnants to dinner the following night when Casey McClellan, winemaker of Seven Hills, was in town. This was showing much better on the second night. The wine has gained weight, and the mineral tones on both the nose and palate have become prominent, leaving the fruit and oak as subtle nuances in the background. A nice floral streak on the nose as well.

Superb!

From magnum, Very rich and forward with bright apple and white fruited flavours, but on the back end there's a faintly oxidative aspect; something slightly bready and surprisingly advanced that suggests this should be drunk soon.

Excellent.

Drank at Amici's with Susan, Chuck and Cindy. Lack experience with CC but I really enjoyed this wine. Light to medium yellow colow with very pleasant aromas and flavors of various fruits and minerals. Good balance, structure and acidity, No evidence of pre-mox. Delicious (mature) right now with easy 5 to 7 years to go.

Had this at Public in NYC. Light color for a CC, nice nose of lemon, orange rind, and a bit of ocean air. Light to meduim bodied with streak of minerality, nice acidity, very focused and fresh, but leaner than any CC I've had before. Fortunate to taste a non-premoxed bottle and seems like it could go another 7-8 yrs.

On the palate, biting and rich at the same with superb balance -- ample minerality, golden apples and other yellow fruits, a touch of lavender honey, palate staining intensity.
