Introduction

The 2nd Sunday group gathered for our regular double blind tasting. For this group, we are presented a couple of double blind warm ups before the main flight. The warm ups are discussed & unveiled before moving on to the themed main flight. We spent forty five minutes or so tasting and evaluating the eight wines for the main flight before ranking the wines and then making guesses as to what we were tasting. Wines are ranked 1-8, one point for each place, and then unveiled from last place to first place. After the tasting, dinner is served with the additional wines brought by the group, nonblind. For this tasting we had twelve tasters and the cost was $50.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Main flight (8 Notes)

These had been opened & decanted by our host about four & a half hours before the tasting. Much of the group found high acid and tannin in the wines and discussion focused on Italy, and quickly to Piedmont. Personally, I am much less sensitive to acid, and to a lesser extent tannin, than the rest of this group, so it took me a while to hone in on these. Though I have relatively little experience with Barolo, I tend to find myself enjoying them when I do come across them. I'll need to review my notes and look for trends for my palate, particularly if there are any relating to "traditional" or "modern" styles.

  • 2013 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Double blind. Deep ruby red color. Cherry, spice and red berry fruit turns darker in profile as it sits in the glass. Along with the darker fruit, orange and floral notes emerge. Abundant red and dark fruit on the palate. Moderate tannins and acidity. Long finish.

  • 2013 G.D. Vajra Barolo Ravera 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Double blind. Meaty. There's also dark fruit and plum along with a spice element. More plum and dark fruit on the palate, with spice and chocolate tones as well. Develops a floral top note, but turns more dense and chewy as it sits.

  • 2013 Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Double blind. The most reticent of the lineup, at least during the initial run through the wines. Dark fruit follows on the palate, picking up spice tones as well. Tannins have a chalky quality. Adds an earthy note as it sits, but also a balsamic quality which I am not fond of.

    My #8, Domino's #8

  • 2013 Pio Cesare Barolo 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Double blind. Similar to E, a bit shy at first, showing generic dark fruit and spice notes. Plummy red fruit on the palate, with a lingering finish, but dominant tannins as well. Becomes more floral and pretty as it opens. More elegant and red fruit dominant. 92+ pts.

  • 2013 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Bussia 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Double blind. Opens with black fruit along with aromas of dried flowers, herbs and mineral. Nice red and black fruit on the palate. The nose and palate become more red fruit dominant as it opens further in the glass, developing pretty spice notes too. Lengthy finish. Had I waited another twenty minutes, I'd likely have this ranked higher, as it kept getting more floral and elegant.

    My #4, Domino's #5

  • 2013 Poderi Colla Barolo Dardi Le Rose Bussia 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Double blind. A bit on the riper side compared to the rest in the lineup, with more plum than anything else, and initially a bit hot. Dark fruit, firm tannin and higher acid. Really opened up nicely in the glass though, adding cherry and currant- showing less obvious ripeness and alcoholic heat. Currants on the palate; tannins remain rather firm.

Flight 3 - Dinner/dessert wines (12 Notes)

  • NV Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Grande Réserve Brut

Courtesy of our host. Just a quick mental note as I was busy pulling corks on the dinner wines. Apple, almond and citrus elements. Fine bead; nice minerality on the finish. Very nice.

  • 2014 Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Our host is a big fan of this vintage overall, and this is yet another example of why. Lemon and mineral notes abound. Some orchard fruit as well. Terrific weight across the palate. Long finish. Gorgeous.

  • 1995 Louis Latour Romanée St. Vivant Les Quatre Journaux 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Courtesy of our host, popped and poured. Cherry and macerated red berry fruit dominates, with a nice underlying earthy funk. More of the same on the palate. Just a little weak across the midpalate and finish. Very good, but not great. 89-90 pts.

  • 2002 Bruno Desaunay-Bissey Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Rouges Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Courtesy of R&D, popped and poured. Cherry, mineral and floral notes. Medium-bodied, nice balance. Cherry and red fruit with good density, finishing with some length and a good amount of fruit. I really enjoyed this-more on the elegant side of the spectrum.

  • 1995 Dominique Laurent Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Double decanted off its sediment about three hours before dinner, pulling the cork again just before service. Cherry and currant with a good dose of earthy sous bois character. If this was during the "200% new oak" era, it's not noticeable at this grand old age. Nicely balanced, with red fruit and mineral. Would have liked a little more on the midpalate I think, but overall I enjoyed this quite a bit. Holding steady, and I have no reason to think this won't hold at this level for a few years yet.

  • 2008 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

An anniversary year bottle for Domino and I, the first of three, double decanted off its sediment about three hours before dinner. Black fruit, currant and spice. On the young side, I think, with flavors of dark fruit, cassis, licorice and plum. A bit of spice and herb as well. Good weight and balance, with a lingering finish. Very happy to have a couple more stashed in the cellar.

  • 2016 Sine Qua Non Syrah Rätsel 16 94 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast

Courtesy of Mark. Opaque inky color. Notes of black fruit, game, pepper and creme de cassis. Full-bodied, of course, but as usual well-balanced...plenty of fruit for the structure. Pepper and black syrah fruit. Long finish with hints of blueberry and herbs. Excellent. 94+ pts.

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Courtesy of MaY. Faded crimson rd showing just a little age with slight bricking at the meniscus. Loads of red berry fruit accented by spice and spent vanilla bean. Lovely red berry fruit, white currant and hints of earth and leather. Balanced. Lovely. 94+ pts.

  • 2017 Château Gruaud Larose 91 Points

Courtesy of MiY. Black currants and dark berry fruit on the nose and palate. Just a really nice wine...will need to keep an eye open for this.

  • 2015 Nino Negri Sfursat 5 Stelle 88 Points

Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Sforzato di Valtellina

Cherry and red berry fruit aromas. The palate follows the bouquet; higher acid. Nice. 88-89 pts.

  • 2000 Mondot 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Courtesy of Marc. Dark color-youthful appearance. Tobacco, black fruit and green herbal notes. Dark fruit on the palate with a good finish. Turns out this was corked-however when I first had it I didn't pick it up at all. Only after had it been open for a while did I start to detect what others had picked up. It's nice to have a lesser sensitivity thanothers at times like this. My score reflects my initial taste...who knows how much I'd have enjoyed a pristine bottle.

  • 2001 Château Suduiraut

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Marmalade, honey and apricot notes. Rich and viscous with ripe stone fruit, marmalade and papaya flavors. Long finish. A stunner, as usual.
