Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Wow, what a surprising treat! Bright and powerful with so much elegance and finesse. I thought this from Pauillac with cassis, ripe black cherry and plum, complex cigarbox and impressive depth. Very impressed when unveiled as Léoville Poyferré. In my "top 5" tonight.

Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Also clearly Left Bank, and I thought Pauillac (oops, thought Latour) with intense concentration and richness, yet refined balance. Very powerful and long. Great now, with upside.

Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Darn, this seemed ripe but slightly tiring. I think I gave this too much air because of schedule problems (open 4 hours, 1 in decanter). Still on the rugged side.

Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Some thought this was simply getting tired, but that viewpoint just ignored that this bottle was lethargic, stewy and seemingly heat damaged.

Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Meaty and powerful, this showed lots of ripe, rich black fruit with spice hints, but is not particularly elegant. I do not expect any further upside.

Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. I haven't had this wine in 5 years, but tonight's bottle was very disappointing. Started out rich and spicy, but clunky. less interesting 30 minutes later. Odd bottle? Too much air?

Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Brawny, meaty and backward with powerful fruit but too much tannin for that fruit, at least for today. I think there is upside, but am not 100% confident. Slightly drying finish.

Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Easily, without doubt the class of the flight. Meaty and dense with ripe black fruit and cigarbox character, but also great balance and elegance. Not the best example of this wine I have ever tasted, but certainly better than others, like one late last year.

Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Nothing subtle or restrained here, this is rich, dense and meaty, Most were able to correctly identify this as the Montrose give the three remaining wines. Easily showing best tonight of the flight tonight, almost as good as a few better bottles from the recent past.

Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Complex combination of mature/ripe black fruit, earth, leather and savory spice. Good+ depth and concentration with a good minerally finish. Just more fresh fruit would have helped. Not nearly as good as another bottle at a tasting last month.

Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Was this a flawed/ tired bottle? Not nearly as tired as the first bottle that was opened and clearly heat damaged, but this also came across as tired and past its peak. I haven't had this wine in almost five years, but I expected more based on prior experience.

Best bottle of this wine I have had in at least 5 years. Intrinsic sweetness and botrytis complexity play off each other wonderfully with fresh and dried apricot. Very good+ weight and depth.

2005 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 91 Points
France, Champagne
In 05/06/07 vertical. Very rich and concentrated with plenty of orchard fruit and at least as much toasted rye bread with a traditional yeasty character. Good+ weight and depth. Probably best to enjoy medium-term, unless you want that oxidative, bready style.

2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 93 Points
France, Champagne
In 05/06/07 vertical. Very bright apple and lemon with so much freshness and energy. Easily the best of the flight (for me). Still restrained with coiled energy, this has upside. Very long finish.
