Introduction

Virtual tasting with Jeff Brinkman, long-time winemaker, and Eric Sothern. Several of us split up these bottles in advance.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2017 Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Just a trace tropical with lots of power of dense orchard fruit with impressive concentration. A bit of baby fat that needs to soften, but this is a great wine in its very early stages. Two bottles, both the same.

  • 2012 Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

My fav of the vertical. Good orchard fruit without being overdone and very good density. Lots of nuanced supporting notes of almond and bright textures. Not a powerhouse, but so charming.

  • 2011 Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Intriguing and complex that starts out ripe and hedonistic, but turns on a dime into a brighter wine that still gives some sweet hints. Not quite as exciting as 17 or 12, but no slouch. Some botrytis, ~15%? according to Jeff.

  • 2013 Rhys Chardonnay Horseshoe Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Fleshy and hedonistic with good weight and. Power, but less complexity than any of the vintages of Alpine.

  • 2017 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Two bottles opened, both identical. Supple and yummy with sweet cherry, then brightening middle forward. Good+ weight and length. Better to cellar a few years, but probably not a 15 year vintage.

  • 2010 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

In vertical. I found the 2009 and 2010 to be very similar, both rich and ripe with lots of density, just finishing a tad warm.

  • 2008 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Broad array or red fruit, still fresh and bright, nicely supported by background spice. Very good depth and density, with even better harmony. Consistent with another bottle from last year. Jeff says these 2008s took a long time to reach this level of pleasure and harmony, but they are great today, and should continue to drink well for another decade.

  • 2006 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard 88 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

In vertical. Some liked this, I am neutral. Rich black fruit wit ultra sweet spice shouting “whole cluster” to an extreme.
