Introduction

David E. organized the third Zoom session. The theme was CT auction price under $125 with at least ten years of age. A few of the wines showed really well.

Flight 1 - White Double Blind (2 Notes)

The Breze was really Burgundian that made me to guess St. Aubin. The 86 Chapoutier was tired and never recovered.

  • 2014 Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Brézé 94 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur

Clean nose displaying fresh rich white citrus fruit, honey, saline, flint and limestone. Excellent concentration, slightly coiled ripe citrus, dense yet focused and precise, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral, and a long cool citrus fruit driven finish with a hint of honey and mineral at the end. It reminds me St Aubin in rich yet cool fruit and strong mineral expression. All guess White Burgundy. Excellent showing.

  • 1986 M. Chapoutier Hermitage Blanc 180th Anniversary 82 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Bright golden color. I splash decant and hope it will open up. Although interesting, it never gets fresh and remains dull. Not sure if this is a correct bottle.

Flight 2 - Bordeaux (6 Notes)

The LB and the D'Issant were very nice. Although not terribly complex and refined, they were solid classic Bordeauxs.

  • 2009 Château Branon 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Expressive nose displaying ripe concentrated black fruit, crème de cassis, blackberry jam, licorice, brewed coffee bean, noticeable oak, lavender, lead pencil and a hint of scorched earth. Excellent concentration, packed black fruit, rich, unctuous and dense, bright acidity, strong earthy mineral, and a long intense ripe black fruit driven finish. My guess is the 03 Leoville Barton. It is a bit monolithic on the second day.

  • 2003 Château Gruaud Larose 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Expressive nose displaying ripe black and red fruit, crème de cassis, cherry, plum, a hint of oak, cedar, lactic, caramel and lead pencil. Fully integrated palate, nicely layered ripe fruit, rich yet silky, and beautifully balanced, good acidity and mineral, and a long ripe black and red fruit driven finish with lactic and caramel at the end. Drinking beautifully.

  • 1986 Château Pape Clément Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Fully mature nose displaying the Cordier funk, sweet red and black fruit, a hint of crème de cassis, plum, lead pencil, ash, noticeable brett, cedar and earth. Fully mature palate displaying excellent concentration, secondary sweet red fruit, silky, good acidity and mineral, still noticeable slightly coarse tannins and a relatively short finish due to Brett. We all think that this is not a representative bottle.

  • 2004 Château Léoville Barton 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Expressive nose displaying opulent blue and red fruit crème de cassis, a hint of plum, lactic, caramel, lead pencil, cedar and earth. Excellent concentration, nicely layered opulent ripe red and blue fruit, rich yet nicely balanced, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with cedar and caramel at the end. Not the most complex Bordeaux but classic and drinking beautifully.

  • 2005 Château d'Issan 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Youthful yet harmonious nose displaying perfectly ripe red fruit, cherry, plum, light caramel, lead pencil, cedar and earth. Perfectly integrated palate, very finely layered sweet red fruit, silky, polished and harmonious, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long sweet red fruit driven finish. This is drinking beautifully. Like the 04 LB, not terribly complex but harmonious and delicious.

  • 2009 Château Rol Valentin Flawed

Smells a bit weird, perhap VA? The last bottle showed well. Need to try another bottle soon.
