Return of the (outdoor) dining

Introduction

In the last few months I've learned COVID might be the best diet time ever so those who follow will have noticed the number of notes has dropped precipitously. That being said, it's also been a time when we worried about favorite spots and there's nowhere I like more in NYC than Atera. So we decided it was worth the 4 mile walk to enjoy their first wine dinner since the pandemic outside. And we were right.

Flight 1 - Starters (1 Note)

Oyster | Jalapeno, Cucumber
Profiterole | Foie Gras, Truffle
Waffle | Tuna, Potato

  • NV Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Le Rosé

    France, Champagne

Always really like this producer and this is a nicely done rose. There's something a bit more herbal to it in addition to the red fruits. Very interesting and a but multidimensional which I appreciate. Miss when you could buy it for $45, but I suppose good wine has to go up in price. Great way to start the meal. Hard to stay to only one glass (stupid diet).

Flight 2 - First course (1 Note)

Scallop | Apple, Sunchoke, Dill

** a real stand-out for me, despite the diet and not finishing any of the other courses I finished this one.

  • NV Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Drinking really particularly well in this case. I have always liked this wine, but rarely found it to be particularly refined (which I think can be hard for a rose esp without some age on it). This did not seem to have much age - very bright and fresh and lots of red fruits but there was a certain softness to the bubbles that seemed like this bottle was in particularly good shape. Again super enjoyable.

Flight 3 - Second course (1 Note)

Salmon | Trout Roe, Spinach

  • 2019 Matthiasson Rosé

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Pure Grenache rose and I am a fan of those. Pours very light. Very similar in style to Provence ones which perhaps are over popular but which I still find myself liking quite a bit. This was drinking well if a bit easy.

Flight 4 - Third course (1 Note)

Raviolo | Potato, Parmesan Truffle

  • 2013 Antica Terra Angelicall

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

An absolute favorite of mine and honestly it's hard to tell if you are really drinking a rose or just a very light pinot with ethereal notes and the right mix of floral boquet and black cherries on the palate. It is a delicious wine and very enjoyable.

Flight 5 - Fourth course (1 Note)

Beef Ribeye | Broccolini, Beech Mushroom (avoided)

  • 2018 Château Pradeaux Bandol Rosé

    France, Provence, Bandol

The 'monster' of the evening - all mouvedre and cinsaut and it's one of those bandol roses which has more of the body of a red wine. Hint more savory but still some red fruit notes. It's a bit lighter in acid and a bit darker in color. Holds up very well though to a ribeye which is no small feat for a non-sparkling rose.

Flight 6 - Fifth course (1 Note)

Panna Cotta | Strawberry, Balsalmic
Milk Chocolate | Miso

Closing

As always, this was a completely top notch meal and reminded me how much better restaurant food can be when it's served there. The scallop dish esp stood out to me with the horseradish in the sauce, but honestly everything was fabulous.
