Introduction

Managed to make one of my off the reserve bench appearances at this monthly gathering again. Bit of a result as it's always fun with interesting wines and plenty of nose and palate challenges in a blind environment...

Flight 1 (17 Notes)

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Served blind.
Peach, cream, butter, slight dusty spice, rich with lemon citrus underpin, very slight struck match and sulphur. In the mouth it's juicy and tangy, citrus over peach, very slight alcohol warmth, lemon pith and peel...
I guessed 2015 Chablis, 1er Cru possibly Montee de Tonnerre

Honey, slightly oxidative notes and nutty flor notes, a little lemon, a touch of herbaceous underpin. in the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, a little citrus and saline characteristics with a textured palate and plenty more flor'y joy. Really Lovely.

  • 2015 Kendall-Jackson Pinot Gris Vintner's Reserve

    USA, California

    Served blind.
Medium minus intensity aromas of honey, citrus, lemon and a little green apple and a touch of herbaceous underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, textured grippy mid palate, a little alcohol warmth, green apple, lemon.
I had no idea what this was...the majority of the characteristics pointed to Semillon with age but the alcohol was confusing so I went with a 2010 Barossa Semillon...

  • 2015 Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi

Red over black fruit, a little funky underpin, touches of rhubarb on the nose. Tight, chalky textured tannins dominate proceedings on the palate with slightly more controlled acidity, a little dried orange peel. The palate tells me all - it's preposterously young, tight but also good quality.

Closing

Usual criticism about the amount of time to taste applies. I had some really marvellous face-plants on my guesses; the pannell nebbiolo left me hanging my head in shame...
