Introduction

Two sets of four of us grabbed a couple tables a cool evening out on the patio at Tilia. It was so great to be back actually eating at Tilia for the first time since the pandemic hit. It was even better to have Steven stop by and drink and talk for an hour too. This was a really fun evening with a number of outstanding wines. Thanks everyone! It was great to get together.

Flight 1 - Our Table (7 Notes)

  • 2002 de Venoge Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Deep gold color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. This was quite nutty and moderately oxidative on the nose; golden fruits, caramelized, dried earth. The palate is fairly rich with just enough acid to bolster the golden baked pear, creme brulee, roasted almonds, dried fruit, and mildy oxidative. There's a good bit of body here and the oxidative character doesn't go too far. I would think these are better over the short term though. 91+pts.

  • 2014 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Light gold color. Drank a glass plus over an hour. Drank this in a flight with a 2014 La Chablisienne 1er Cote de Lecchet. The Michel MdT had slightly more color with a richer nose, ocean spray, fennel, just a little damp earth, lemon and mineral. The palate was a little more round, still good acid, but less than you might expect from the vintage; lemon, tart, lots of dry stone and some lemon rind. The La Chablisienne had more zip, brightness and the crisp acidity you'd expect, so more prototypical. Both very good.

  • 2014 La Chablisienne Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Léchet 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Pale gold color. Drank a glass plus over an hour. Drank this in a flight with a 2014 Louis Michel 1er MdT. The nose is very bright, floral, Meyer lemon, tart pear; cthe palate is very crisp, citrus, plenty of limestone, more of a laser cut to go with the stellar minerality. The Michel MdT had slightly more color with a richer nose and the palate was a little more round. The La Chablisienne had more zip, brightness and the crisp acidity you'd expect, so more prototypical. Both are very good with a nod to the La Chablisienne. 92+pts.

  • 1998 Domaine Louis Remy Latricières-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Very nice nose, sultry and provocative floral notes heightened by high toned spice aromas, deep red berries, lots of earth and mineral tones too. The palate has a nice maturity, resolving tannins, fairly satiny texture, red fruits, blood orange, bright with plenty of earth and a mix of spiced potpourri and minerals. Very elegant, this was a great ex-cellar find. 93+ to 94pts.

  • 2003 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass plus over an hour plus. The nose is bursting with wet earth and truffle, rose, very floral, red fruts and plenty of it, spice, dried garrigue and cigar. The palate is full bodied, silky, lots of ripe red fruit, raspberry, cassis, gravel, cigar and cigar ash with a little kirsch. This has great spice notes on the back end with a little briary note, very long. Excellent stuff, very clean. 94+pts.

  • 2005 Château Guiraud 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Medium gold color. Drank a glass from 375 ml over 30 minutes plus. Geez, these '05's continue to drink well across the board. This was much brighter and more vibrant the my '06 that we drank along side. Both were good in their own way, but I adore the brightness here and lift. Very fresh, white flowers, peach and tangerine and pineapple, spiced, elegant and well balanced.

  • 2006 Château Guiraud 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Deep gold color. Drank a glass from 375 ml over 30 minutes. This was more mature, deeper, unctuous, honeyed, orange marmalade, caramelized brown sugar, ripe pear and baked apple, sweet, rich and round. Very good but with a much more mature profile than the sleek, bright '05 we drank along side. 91+ to 92pts.
