The Alba, London
Tasted Friday, February 8, 2008 by Paul D with 809 views
Attended by 12 off-liners and accompanied with a simple, but well prepared menu, which suited the wines well:
Mushroom Risotto
Grilled rib-eye with garlic roast potatoes and spinach.
Cheese
Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Complex but quite youthful, red-toned fruit, menthol, slightly caramelly, lithe and quite elegant across the palate, with an extremely long, sneaky finish. 92-94.

Soft, chocolatey ripe fruit. Plummy, decent concentration, generous with apporoachable tannins, decent length and concentration. 88-89.

Slightly more closed at first, opening up slowly to reveal some lovely perfumed cassis, plum, some spice, very well concentrated, quite lithe and focused with lovely fine tannic backbone, and thrilling acidity on the long finish. Lovely and showing well. 91-93.

Ripe dark fruit, vanilla, coffee. Very concentrated and structuted, if slightly tight at present, some blackcurrant fruit, plenty of oak, needs time but will be excellent. 89-91+

Ripe, plum fruit, vanilla, hint of soy sauce. Light and quite mature on the palate, light/moderate tannins, attractive fresh fruit, some oaky notes, good acidity, slightly short on the finish. Drinking well, unlikely to improve significantly.

Medium/deep ruby, narrow rim. Restrained, creamy red-currant fruit, decent concentration, fine integrated tannins, vigoruous, refreshing acidity, nice lingering finish. Really enjoyed this, has come on nicely over the last two years. 90.

Purpley fruit, quite thick and chunky on the palate, a little rustic, good acidity but some bitter tannin on the finish. Notes a bit sparse on this one but remember being a little underwhelmed - others liked it a lot more. 86-88.

Again notes a little sparse on this one - a little light, red-fruited, nice fresh acidity but short on the finish. 85-87.

Lightly perfumed, quite fruity nose, a little green but not off-putting. Medium bodied, quite elegant with cool fruit, a little short. 84-86.

Attractive, slightly smokey tobaccoey nose, hint of plum and bilberry. Well structured and balanced on the palate, slight tannic signature on the good length finish. A very good 94, 88-90.

This one really quite badly corked, just a hint of red-currant fruit and spice underneath.

Creamy strawberry nose, hint of caramel and mint. Not overly intense but attractive and complex. Palate lacking a little structure but tasty enough with creamy fruit, shortish finish. 85-87.

Tobacco and dark fruit. Not hugely concentrated but attractive, with good acidity. A little tannic on the good length finish but overall very good indeed. 88-90.

Lovely cassis and bilberry perfume, tobacco again, good structure, plenty of stuffing, good length tobaccoey finish. Excellent, if not quite showing at the level of the TWS tasting. 91-92.

Soft, caramelly mellow strawberry fruit, hints of spice. Very soft and evolved, perhaps lacking a little structure, no blockbuster but eminently drinkable, and a good length pretty finish. Not going to improve though. 89-91.

Slightly tannic signature, but quite interesting, surprisingly fresh and elegant. 87-89.

When first poured this briefly showed it's complex, spicy, tobaccoey, if slightly funky class before becoming quickly subdued, and then slightly corky on the palate with a stripped finish. A real shame - clear case of low level cork taint.

Lovely, complex spicy, funky nose - notes of fruit cake. Quite generous still on the palate, harmonious, fully mature and a lovely drink with fresh acidity carrying a good length finish. Excellent. 90.

1998 Château Petit Village 89 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Youthful appearance, opaque ruby, narrow rim. Very ripe dark plum fruit on the nose, with plenty of vanilla oak. Abundant, ripe tannins on the palate, well concentrated fresh, fleshy fruit, a little simple at present, decent acidity, tannins noticeable on good length finish but well covered by fruit. Should come together and improve considerably with time. 88-90+

1982 Château Petit Village 86 Points

Medium/pale mahogany. Sweet, mellow red-toned fruit (strawberry), hints of caramel, not hugely concentrated but very pleasant and mellow, if somewhat shortish on the finish. 85-87.

1961 Château Petit Village 93 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Noticeably darker than the 1982, intriguing, elusive, complex nose with spice, earth, hints of prune, underlying red fruit. Fully mature on the palate but still quite vigorous, earthy, spicey, perhaps more dark fruited (plum?) than the nose, very good length elegant finish. Lovely. 92-94.
