Introduction

We gathered with m/m Vino Me and m/m thelostverse for our annual post-Thanksgiving event. It was great to catch up and have some semblance of normalcy return to our lives, if only for an evening. Thanks to the Vino Mes and TLVs for a terrific evening.

Popped and poured as we grazed on crab claws and shrimp. Opens with apple and vanilla notes, developing a fig note as it opens and warms in the glass. Layered and balanced, with a long finish.

  • 1998 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Deep color. Notes of bruised apple, butterscotch and nuts, with a subtle caramel element in there as well. Much of the same on the palate. Decent, but nothing exciting at this stage.

  • 1998 Domaine Francois Lamarche Grands-Echezeaux 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Quickly double decanted off its sediment and poured a couple of hours later. Faded crimson color. Notes of iron and black pinot fruit along with something a bit woody. Cherry, iron and herb on the palate. Adds a chocolate-covered cherry note with air.

  • 1994 Joseph Phelps Insignia

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Courtesy of tlv, decanted off its sediment and poured. Dark core with just a bit of bricking. Notes of leather and black currants, cedar and florals. Tannins are nearly fully resolved at this stage, and though mature still shows the ripe fruit of the vintage. Leather and iron qualities as well, finishing with good length. While I think it should hold at this level for a few years, I'd opt for enjoying over the short term, through 2022.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Las Cases 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Courtesy of VM, decanted 8 hours before dinner. Dark youthful color with notes of black currants, licorice and dried leaves. Subtle spice and tobacco elements as well. Has some tannin to shed but quite nice with the extended decanting. On the young side of the spectrum, I think this still needs some time to reveal its full potential.

  • 2016 The Third Twin Nuestra Señora del Tercer Gemelo The Third Twin Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Decanted about an hour. Dark inky color with aromas of currants and grapey black fruit. Hints of game and pepper underneath, as well as a subtle violet/floral quality. Full-bodied and youthfully firm tannins have a fine edge. Flavors of blue and black fruit, chocolate and spice. Lengthy finish. 93-94 pts.

  • 2015 Andremily Mourvèdre 96 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

Courtesy of tlv. Opens with aromas of black fruit, black cherry, cured meat and pepper. Full-bodied. Firm, sweet tannins. Well-balanced. Abundant black fruit on the palate, with a spice-tinged finish. Really impressive.

  • 2006 Dominus Estate 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Courtesy of tlv. Currant, green tobacco, cassis and saddle leather notes. On the full side of medium-bodied. Tannins are fine-grained and still need some time to integrate fully but overall this is really beginning to show well. The palate follows the bouquet, adding spice and dried herb notes in the finish. Strong from the attack through the finish; impeccable balance. I know the style shifted a bit sometime in this mid-2000s era, but this vintage is definitely an "old school" Dominus and very much in my wheelhouse. 95+

  • 2006 Peter Michael L'Esprit des Pavots 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

Popped and poured to compare to the Dominus. Vanilla and dark fruit qualities with medium tannins. Nicely balanced, and quite good but lacks the finesse and depth of the Dominus, not that this was a surprise to anyone. Nice enough out of the bottle, but probably would have shown a bit better with an hour or two in the decanter. Drink now-2026.

  • 1999 Domaine Francois Lamarche Echezeaux 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Popped and poured. Light ruby red with some bricking. Black cherry, roasted game, mineral and floral qualities. Balanced. Much more fruit remains on this than the '98 opened earlier in the evening. Very nice. 91-92 pts.

  • 2004 Franz Hirtzberger Weissburgunder Beerenauslese 93 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Courtesy of VM. Light amber color with a lovely perfume of apricot, pear liqueur, ripe stone fruit and honeyed peach. Rich and unctuous, this coats the palate but retains a freshness due to its balancing acidity. Lingers on the palate. Excellent. 93-94 pts.
