  • 2019 Maison Pierre Brisset Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sous Roche Dumay Blanc 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

Pierre Brisset started making wine in 2014. Some owned parcels, some on long-term contracts. In 2019, Pierre added Saint-Aubin 1er Sous Roche Dumay. He had been looking for a long time to make a St Aubin as he feels it is the closest in style to Chassagne-Montrachet, yet he had the patience to wait for the right plot. Sous Roche Dumay is a wonderful plot in the right part of Saint-Aubin, near En Remilly, in the highest part of Sur Gamay, and Pierre’s grapes come from 70 yo vines.

A very delicate nose, but there's some amplitude on the palate. Slightly green, truffley nose. Vanilla oak on the palate, bitter.

  • 2019 Domaine Larue Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Something slightly exotic here on the nose, but again that combination of vanilla oak and bitter, phenolic, stoniness on the palate. A sense of briskness. Good but not great.

  • 2019 Domaine de Montille Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Cailleret 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Cailleret is the first plot of Chardonnay the Domaine acquired, in the 1990s. At one point it was a monopole of Charton. It's just adjacent to Montrachet and below Chevalier - a top 1er cru.

Tank sample - to be bottled in March. Gorgeous nose: racy, complex, floral and with a sense of completeness. Quite tart and spritely on the palate, with green tea, clementine and lime; very precise and refreshing. Oak treatment is tasteful - Loic Lamy says the terroir will absorb even a fair amount of new oak. Classic Puligny.

Loic Lamy says he would wait at least five years before opening one, and the wine will be at peak from 10-20 years after vintage.

  • 2019 Domaine Pernot-Bélicard Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Philippe Pernot-Belicard is the son of Paul Pernot. Initially he farmed the Belicard family's vines given his father is still not retired. His wines took a turn towards higher quality in around 2014. Perrieres is his flagship plot and the vines date from 1955.

There's obviously some creamy, vanillary oak on the nose, but again there's a good sense of tension on the palate - lemon, caramel, lots of concentration, with enough dry extract that it almost feels tannic. Typical 2019 - refreshing and intense.

  • 2019 J.M. Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Jean-Marc set up the domaine in 1985 and is the grandson of Etienne Sauzet. Referts is on the border of Meursult and can tend to be a little fatter and more expressive than other Puligny.

Lemon cream and some green vegetation on the nose. Delicious bitterness on the palate, quite impactful but not showy and there's plenty of freshness once again. Tasty and expressive.

  • 2019 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ-Canet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Champ-Canet is a good location above Combottes and adjacent to Meursault Perrieres. Benoit Riffault says it can tend towards a creaminess that's not common in Puligny - elegant but ripe and a bit spicy.

Slightly broader on the nose, seamlessly combining cream, sherbert, fruit and cereal notes. There's an authority on the palate - it's many things all at once, and very persistent. Beautiful to drink now but could well age 15-20 years.
