Introduction

Just shoehorned a quick trip to Tyrrell's between lockdowns...

Flight 1 (15 Notes)

  • 2020 Tyrrell's Sémillon

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Apple tending to custard apple, a little soft lemon, perhaps almost a smidge of smoke (or I'm imagining that because of the vintage) mineral, sulphur...In the mouth it's juicy, apple, softly fleshy, enjoyable. Nice, simple.

  • 2014 Tyrrell's Sémillon Single Vineyard Belford

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley, Belford

Mineral, a little toast and honey with a tiny touch of kerosene, slight green apple, lime over lemon pith, very slight butter as well. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, buttery, toast, with green apple, honey, a little texture, rich, long, lovely.

  • 2015 Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Creamy, buttery, a little sulphur, honey, a little apple, wetly juicy, with time the apple tends to green apple, a little lime. Medium plus intensity acidity gets sharper as time passes, textured mid palate, wet without being green, Nice but not wonderful.

Citrus; more orange and kumquat with a little grapefruit, over slightly unripe stone fruit, a little cream, butter and sulphur. Juicy, fleshy, a little bitterness and alcohol warmth on the palate, short. A bit meh.

  • 2019 Tyrrell's Chardonnay Hunter Valley

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

A little struck match and lees stirring. toast, savoury, stone fruit is beneath this with a little sulphur. medium plus intensity acidity, plenty of textured grip dries out the mid palate and front of gums, the fruit is a little lost beneath the structure. Nah.

  • 2018 Tyrrell's Chardonnay Vat 47

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Medium plus intensity aromas are peachy though this is also quite rich with cream, plenty of caramel, stone fruit, riper tan normal with time in the glass it softens and lightens. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, textured, fruit is a little diminished, a little melon and pear skin bitterness. Hmm

  • 2019 Tyrrell's Pinot Noir

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Pretty cherry, a little touch of ashiness but very controlled, touches of sweet spice. Juicy, cherry, a little textured mid palate burr is very slightly grainy, drying but carries the fruit and a little spice. A touch of alcohol warmth and slight bitterness on the finish. Hmm.

  • 2019 Tyrrell's Shiraz Pinot Noir Special Release

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Savoury, aniseed, slightly leathery, over creamy notes, a touch of chalkiness, cherry, very slight plums and violets. Medium plus intensity acidity, savoury, cherry, plummy, drying tannic grip is a little coarse but compliments rather than dominates the fruit. Quite a pretty palate and nose. Nice.

  • 2018 Tyrrell's Shiraz Estate Grown

  • 2018 Tyrrell's Shiraz Old Hut

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Toasty, plums, blackberry, pretty fruit again; wild brambles, over sweet spice, a little black tea note as well. Medium plus intensity acidity, ripe black fruits, tight, cats tongue rasp to the tannins and a fair lick of alcohol warmth help carry the fruit on its medium plus length. Hmm.

  • 2018 Tyrrell's Shiraz Single Vineyard Stevens

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Savoury, ashy, leathery, plummy over sweet spice and peppery spice, almost a little tarragon here. Concentrated on the palate, juicy acidity and plenty of tight chalky, woody tannins which are a little too much for the plummy black fruit at the moment. A bit of a puppy.

  • 2019 Tyrrell's Shiraz Single Vineyard NVC

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Savoury, brambles, a little pepper, earth, a smidge of stalks almost pretty jubey whole berry notes...savoury, juicy, brambly fruit, sweet spice underpinned by black pepper that is supported by alcohol. Tannins are grainy, grippy and drying. Young. Nose better than the palate. Okay.

  • 2019 Tyrrell's Shiraz Vat 9

  • 2019 Tyrrell's Vat 8

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Cream, vanilla, caramel, a little black cherry and brambles, sweet spice, very fruit and oak forward. Medium plus acidity, very slight green note here, cream, vanilla, quite oaky notes, fruit a little diminished shows plums over blackcurrant and black cherry, chalky tannic grip.

  • 2017 Tyrrell's Vat 8

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Savoury, gamey, earthy, a little farty and funky, under this it's showing blackcurrant and plums. Sweet spice; actually with more this shows more and more fruit, oak and savoury notes. Lots going on on the, all good. Medium plus intensity acidity, savoury, concentrated, fleshy, drying tannins are chalky and long, persistent, black hued fruit trots along by the tannins like a faithful hound, the oak is also present as a walking stick, offering support, to stretch the analogy. Young. Very good.

Closing

Based on this tasting I think that Mount Pleasant are just pipping on my chart of Hunter favourites though there are a few good wines here as well..
