Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Étienne Calsac Champagne Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs Les Rocheforts 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Tasted blind. Light golden; aromatic, brioche with lemon cream, a little apple skin; palate is full bodied, rich and flavorful with apple skin, lemon cream, medium alcohol, medium-plus acidity, moderate persistence through the midpalate; finish is medium-plus length. My guess would be Blanc de Blanc with age, maybe from the early 2000s. 91
This bottle was 2016 base but solera styled.

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 162eme 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Tasted blind. Deeper golden; aromatic, some matchstick reduction, more oxidative apple; palate is really fascinating with medium body, medium-plus acidity, low dosage, a really interesting strong fruit core with melon, pear, some tropical papaya, seems youthful despite the slight oxidative character; finish is long. This is character driven, seems a bit coiled but incredibly enjoyable. Reminds me of a Selosse in character. 93
On reveal, really a nice showing for Krug. A lot of character for a relatively large production cuvee.

  • 2005 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Tasted blind. Lemon-yellow; aromatic, minerals, slight matchstick, Grand Cru Chablis nose with depth and complexity; palate is medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, seems quite youthful and still needs a bit of time to meld and develop; finish is medium-plus. Balanced and enjoyable but youthful, though everything about this screams high quality. 92-93+
On reveal, a bit less brioche than I usually get from Comtes, but overall a very nice showing. I have some bottles and will wait a few years on mine.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2012 Domaine Bruno Clair Chambolle-Musigny Les Véroilles 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Tasted blind. Pale ruby, minimal bricking; high intensity aromatics, red fruited but spice predominant with nutmeg and clove, then nutmeg again (lots of nutmeg), a bit of cinnamon; palate is light bodied, light-medium youthful tannins, red fruited, medium acidity, low-medium alcohol, palate isn’t quite as exciting or complex as the nose but seems youthful; finish is medium length. Youthful but good quality, maybe burgundy 1er cru? Not sure where I would place this in burgundy. Not quite Vosne or Volnay. Maybe a Chambolle? 91-92+
With air, the spice moderates a bit and more resembles Vosne spice. That would be my guess. 92+
After reveal: Bruno Clair Chambolle. Really enjoyable wine for drinking now and the next decade.

  • 2006 Hubert Lignier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Tasted blind. Light-medium ruby, minimal bricking; medium aromatics, spice, a little musk or funk, red fruited; palate is medium bodied, rustic medium tannins, medium alcohol, some red fruits; finish is medium length. Seems youthful. Rusticity isn’t quite NSG with no iron, could be Gevrey or maybe Pommard or Cote de Beaune? 90
On reveal: This doesn’t speak to me right now, but I could see how this would grow over a decade into something more profound. Hard to predict though.

  • 2009 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Tasted blind. Light ruby, youthful color; aromatic, wild red berries, sweet spice; palate is light bodied, low tannin, medium-plus acidity, low alcohol, red fruited; finish is medium-plus length. This is everything I expect from red burgundy and, I would guess, a very good Chambolle. Maybe something like a Bertheau 1er? Still fairly youthful. 92+
On reveal: Really lovely, just a classic and balanced red burgundy.
