This has come together nicely since a slightly hot bottle in 2008. Mid garnet, quite evolved especially cf the Geyserville alongside. Briary fruit, really quite smoky on the palate.caries through to the palate with a sense of bonfire. Softly autumnal finish. Fireside spice. Heading towards a mature Rioja profile with a bit more body and bite. ***1/2

Mid ruby. Brighter and more vibrant than the LS alongside. Brighter and richer red fruit. Again, a briary element with autumnal overtones, but a core of sweeter and redder fruit. Some fruit compote intensity too. A little more energy here. ****

  • 2007 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Bottle 1. Mid to fading ruby. Denser and less expressive on the nose cf the 11 Burlotto MV. Fuller and broader. Some structure here, tannins quite dry and firm initially, needing food, though with air these integrate and soften. Lovely wine, but shaded by the flair of the first Burlotto bottle. Super wine though. ****1/2

  • 2011 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Bottle 1. Mid garnet. Gorgeous nose, roses, violets, and a touch of warm creosote. Smooth, densely silky on the attack. Sweet fruited core. Finely tannic line giving a porcellaneous edge to the finish. If the Monorivato alongside is the slightly self conscious haute couture, this is the floaty summer dress, worn effortlessly. *****

  • 2007 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 95 Points

Second bottle fairly consistent with the first, but a little more resolved. This has rounded out and is a smoother version of the luxe style the first bottle hinted at. *****

Bottle 2. A little less fruity exuberant than the first bottle. Just a touch more restraint. Ever so slightly self conscious. More classical perhaps, and a smidge more elegant, though not quite as fun. ****1/2

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 1977 Gould Campbell Porto Vintage 89 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Decanted 9hrs. Initially mid red fruit and bright when decanted, this has taken on weight and darkened a little back in the bottle. Dark fruited, smooth, a touch of pepper. Some spirit. Decent enough, with the caveat I’m not a port drinker. ***
