The Kenwood, Mpls, MN
Tasted Thursday, August 5, 2021 by rocknroller with 132 views
This was the Luis organized tasting group. Theme was "Bring a Nice Bottle". We had a fun mix of wines tonight with good overall balance. Nine of gathered to share friendship, wine and food. As always the Kenwood delivers in spades. BT, DS, ML, JP, JG, LD, J/CG, and myself.

NV Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve 93 Points

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. Crazy toasted nose, pear, nutty, brioche. The palate is deep and powerful, pear, autolytic, brioche; creamy, dreamy and long. Loved it

2016 Didier Dagueneau Blanc Fumé de Pouilly 93 Points
France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé
Pale straw color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Same bottle as Bellissimo and others. I think his note speaks volumes when he says "world class", yes, absolutely. Love the nose with chamomile, lychee, white flowers, mandarin orange, and lemon. The palate shows the chamomile also, with flint and dry stone minerality that drives the ship, tart, expressive citrus notes of mandarin orange and lemon, lychee and gooseberry. Lean, driven and really good.

2011 Mount Eden Vineyards Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains 93 Points
USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. This was my wine of the flight, nudging out the '14 Leeuwin. This is big, but with plenty of minerality and spice to balance everything else, pear, lemon, dried herbs, and modest vanilla. The palate is full bodied, though not heavy, sweet pear, lemon and dry extract, dry stones, oily, almond, creamy, dried herbs.

2014 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 92 Points
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Still rather lean with Meyer lemon, orange, spice, very mineral driven, soil and gravel. Really good, but was looking for that extra gear tonight. 92+ to 93pts.

2016 00 Wines Chardonnay EGW
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Light gold color. Sulfragette City, it just dominates this one dimensional wine with a lot of oak to boot. Yes, there is more minerality there, but I am yet to see the light, and have moved on. No score, sub-90.

2008 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 94 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
Medium red color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. The last time I had this wine was a little over two years ago and it didn't show well. My comments were to give it a lot of air or 2 years. Well, here we are two years later, and tonight we have a gem. Brilliant nose with red fruits, raspberry, cured meats, sauvage, red cherry, great dried spices and sous bois. The palate is medium bodied plus, and takes on weight over time, with a sleek texture and lots savory components, red cherry, red raspberry, roasted meat, well delineated and it has gorgeous spice notes. Loved it. I loved the complexity and spice here which juxtaposed the (no pun intended) serene beauty and purity of the the '13 Dom Serene Winery HIll that was near its equal. There's more to come with this '08 Thomas.

2013 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Winery Hill Vineyard 93 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
Medium red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Drank this next to an '08 Thomas. Geez Louise is this perfumed, wow, sweet strawberries and red raspberry with rose petals galore, baking spice and subtle dried wood spice. The palate is medium bodied and lacy with lift and pretty red cherry and red berry fruits, silky with delicate complimentary spices. Some of the '13's are taking their time, but many have turned the corner now. This was a lovely, elegant and captivating wine drinking wonderfully now with many years ahead.

2011 Antinori Tignanello 91 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Very dark red color. 2 hour decant. Drank a glass over about an hour. Same bottle as galeskj. Plummy, tar, very spicy, a bit angular and sharper on the palate, lots of glycerin, blackberry, cassis, full bodied. Nose is there, palate needs some time to catch up yet.

2008 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Éloge 93 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley
Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank a glass over about an hour. CS55, CF25 M10 PV10. Last drank this almost three years ago and it showed well at that point. Things have kicked up a notch since then with better overall integration. This has a sweet nose of cassis and creme de cassis, great damp earthiness and a hint of funk, pencil, lovely wood tones and mountain wild berry fruits throughout. The palate is consistent, velvety and and charming.
