Phoenix Palace and Regents Park Lunch

Introduction

Lovely lunch in Phoenix Palace, followed by an impromptu standup fizz tasting in Regents Park.

Flight 1 - Phoenix Palace (6 Notes)

Dim sum - really nice, and excellent value. Some initial confusion about the corkage but everything turned out wonderfully in the end.

  • 2013 Louis Roederer Champagne Vintage Brut Rosé

    France, Champagne

Initially - quite tight and coiled up, but clearly a well put together wine. Over the next hour or so - really started to sing. Not overly vinous but lots going on. A really lovely wine.

If it were a line in a song it would be “this monkey’s gone to heaven” in the chorus of Monkey Gone to Heaven by the Pixies

  • NV Bodegas San Francisco Javier Viña Corrales Fino Pago Balbaina

    Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry

Lovely - well put together, nutty, aromatic, super precise. A more full mid palate than one sometimes gets with fino, and a very welcome 15% abv. Whenever I drink wine like this I wonder why I don’t drink more sherry.

If this were a line in a song it it would be Cyndi Lauper singing “you with the sad eyes” in True Colors.

  • 2006 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Viña Gravonia

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Woof. So good. Was worried that the preceding sherry would make it hard for this to shine - but nothing could be further from the truth. A hint of sweetness perhaps, a richness, but by no means cloying - so well balanced and just ready for action. I’ve had three bottles of this and they’ve all been good, but this was great.

If it were a line in a song it would be “and you give yourself away” in the studio version of “with or without you” by U2.

  • 2009 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Delicious. A crunchy savouriness - still energetic and engaging, although not sure how much further it has to go.

If it were a line in a song it would be “I sat on a rug, biding my time, drinking her drink wine” in Norwegian Wood from Rubber Soul by the Beatles.

  • 2014 Soliste Cellars Pinot Noir Solitaire

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Clearly top quality new world Pinot. Well made, decent fruit, but I struggle to love this.

If it were a song lyric it would be “Just a lonely girl” from Don’t stop believin by Journey. Depending on your taste it’s either the studio version, or being played by a wedding band at 9:15 after the young kids have gone to bed but before the teenagers are drunk.

  • 1973 Weingut Baron Knyphausen Erbacher Michelmark Riesling Beerenauslese Eiswein

    Germany, Rheingau

Whose ever drunk a black Riesling? Me!

If this is were a line in a song it would be the opening “Hard Rock Hallelujah” from the song of the same name by Lordi, played painfully loudly in the morning after you’d overindulged the night before.

Flight 2 - Standup fizz in the park (3 Notes)

We repaired to Regents Park and enjoyed a few bottles of bubbles, sourced from the local oddbins. As fun as it was unexpected.

  • 2016 Gusbourne Brut Réserve

    United Kingdom, England, Kent

Liked this - more than my companions i think. Touch of greenness - but also a toasty brioche note that made it enjoyable to drink. Downed in an unseemly short time standing in Regents Park.

If this is were a line in a song it would be “did you crack it did you grab it” from the U2 b side “where did it all go wrong”.

  • 2012 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage

    France, Champagne

So much more put together than the preceding english fizz. Still has time ahead of it but if you had these in the cellar you wouldn’t feel bad about taking them out now.

If this were a song lyric it would be the first two repetitions of “I love it when you call me names” in the studio version of the Joan Armatrading song of the same name.

  • 2012 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut

    France, Champagne

Third and final bottle in our post lunch park visit. Clearly a cut above the veuve. Just a balanced, delicious champagne.

If this were a song lyric, it would it would be “I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana” in the studio version of “me and Bobby mcgee” by Janis Joplin.
