Flight 1 - Washington State Wines (4 Notes)

Four wines, one white and three reds

  • 2018 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate Blanc 93 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Medium lemon in color. Tropical nose with pineapple, stone fruit, elderflower, ripe gooseberries and lemon grass notes. Good attack on the palate. Dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol, medium extract, medium to full bodied. You can feel the semillon on the palate, there is a plump fruitiness to it. It's well balanced by acidity and a bit of bitterness. The oak is well integrated and can be felt on the medium plus finish. It is drinking very well young but I can see this aging nicely and gaining some weight over the next 8 to 10 years.
On a lineup of all reds, this was my WOTN. It reminded me of a ripe year of Domaine de Chevalier with the bitterness of Musar. Impressive effort.

  • 2016 Force Majeure Parabellum Alluvio Bordeaux Blend 92 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

Deep ruby in color. Blackberry, violet, roasted pepper, crushed gravel, caramel, cassis and cocoa. Drying palate, full bodied, medium acidity, high tannin, very dusty, medium plus alcohol, medium plus extract. It wraps up with a chalky long finish. Still young but quite complex. This needs some more time in the cellar to tame those tannins and develop some tertiaries IMHO. I'd lay it down for 5-10 years.

  • 2012 Andrew Will Ciel du Cheval Vineyard 93 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

Medium garnet in color. Very blue on the nose, with some cedar, leather and mushroom. Soft, supple and creamy on the palate. Dry, medium acidity, medium low tannin, medium alcohol. The finish is dry, rounded and long. Time has done well to this bottle. It has developed nicely. The fruit is still present but there is a good amount of tertiary notes that keeps it interesting. I think it should linger in this state for a few years under good storage but it's definitely ready to go.

  • 2014 Soos Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Terrible Beauty 91 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Deep ruby in color. Cherry, red currant, anise, and a bit of baking spice. Dry, full bodied, medium acidity, medium tannin, medium alcohol.
Brief finish. This felt like the most fruit forward bottling of the line up. It can use a bit more grip and more extract. Still, it is quite enjoyable.

Closing

The white ended up being my WOTN. If I had to pick a red, at the moment I think the Ciel du Cheval is at at great stage. A few years from now, I'd take a bet on the Parabellum Alluvio.
