Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Angélus 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Red cherry fruit with some darker elements of plum, an herbaceous overlay and drops of sweet spice. Fresh and juicy palate, youthful, great structure and tension even if somewhat tannic. A decent Angélus.

  • 1996 Château Angélus 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Not overly expressive, a bit of earth and leather, otherwise mostly red and some darker berry fruit with herbal overlays. Fresh and juicy palate again with a long finish, also finding tobacco here. Maybe balance could be better…

  • 1995 Château Angélus 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Red berry, fresh strawberry, showing precision and linearity, herbs and spices in the mix along with just hints of aging notes. Fresh with pretty grippy tannin, clearly needs more time but I do see more potential, although the lack of harmony could come to haunt this.

  • 1994 Château Angélus 89 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
More mature and settled with earth and mushrooms taking center stage. But also a bit musty which cloaked the fruit and left you with a tired impression. Also not fully integrated, mouthcoating tannin and overall leaving you with a rustic Impression. Not a good mix.

Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • 1988 Château Angélus 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
The colour on this was already quite faded. Earth, leather and mushrooms, a bit of ripe cherry and plum. Also foliage and sous-bois. Pretty mature profile. Still fresh on the palate, but with an acidity overhang at first that leads into a very tannic finish. Aromatically rather thin and clearly showing the age.

  • 1990 Château Angélus 85 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Ripe, borderline over-extracted fruit, a bit kirsch-like, some leather and earth. Heavy acidity overhang with not much structure left to hold everything together. Feels tired and past its prime. The cork revealed afterwards was completely soaked and the owner did mention he thought immediately this was flawed. That said, the gang voted this wine of the flight and many liked it. I think this was slightly off and I did have a much better bottle once. Also worth noting I got the last pour from the bottle which was loaded with sediment.

  • 1992 Château Angélus 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
This showed precise red berry fruit, elegant and humble, leather and barnyard, some sweet tobacco. Fresh yet powerful palate, tense with quite some weight behind. A long and leathery finish. Along with 1995 drinking pretty well now.

All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Dried tobacco leaves, leather, red cherry and dark cherry. Densely knit aromatically, even if not overly expressive. More fruity on the palate but with both lots of acidity and tannin. Not really well integrated.
    Tasting note:
Not overly expressive, a bit of earth and leather, otherwise mostly red and some darker berry fruit with herbal overlays. Fresh and juicy palate again with a long finish, also finding tobacco here. Maybe balance could be better…

  • 2001 Château Angélus 95 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Ripe cherry, mineral notes, herbal dimensions and with a bit of imagination also some spiciness to it. Also whiffs of leather. Very youthful, fresh and vibrant palate. If it wasn’t for some lingering heat, this would have been a total stunner.

  • 2000 Château Angélus 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Ripe red and blue berry fruit profile. There was also a fresh, sweet spiciness with herbal elements. Plenty of acidity in the structure with firm, maybe slightly greenish tannin. Would pick the lesser 2001 or 2002 vintages over this.

  • 2002 Château Angélus 95 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Ripe, pretty extracted fruit but actually hitting the sweet spot, a bit of mocha, tobacco, dried herbs and black tea. Dense, firmly structured. The palate came across in overdrive, needed time to settle and reach cruising altitude, but otherwise pretty impressive. Would have ventured an even higher score but when returning for a second round I felt there were some off-notes in the mix.

  • 2003 Château Angélus 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Not as expressive as 2002, but with a similar profile showing nicely extracted, ripe fruit. Palate was nice and juice, however plenty of tannin and acidity made it hard to enjoy.

Flight 4 (4 Notes)

  • 2009 Château Angélus 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Sweet, sexy and spicey with ripe, red berry fruit, some tobacco and vanilla and licorice. Later on salted caramel. Some heat on the palate, almost searing acidity with ripe and extracted fruit. Too much at first. A pretty amazing nose all in all and the palate in a second visit came across lighter and fresher. This could perform on quite a different level after a proper decant.

  • 2010 Château Angélus 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Quite extracted once again with a definitely darker fruit profile than other vintages showing more plum and fig. This is fully reflected in a close to overpowering palate with plenty of acidity and mouthcoating tannin. Not even remotely close to a drinking window and was hard to find much pleasure, although structure and substance was there.

All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Tobacco, coffee, fine sous-bois, an unusually cool fruit profile, although leaning towards dark berries. A dense and harmonious palate showing aromatic complexity, lots of structure without coming across too wild.

  • 2015 Château Angélus 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Leather, earth with again a darkish fruit profile (similar to 2010). Interestingly, not as precise as 2014, but otherwise quite character-wise pretty close. Palate not as balanced and lacking mid-palate structure I found. This did get another boost from aeration after only a few minutes hence the score could have climbed up a few steps with more time.

All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Quite ripe and extracted and on balance a rather dark fruit profile. Quite densely built, creamily textured palate. Intensity even if not overly complex. Revisiting showed more fruit and freshness.

  • 2004 Château Angélus 96 Points

All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Leather with a precise, just a tad sexy fruit. Dark chocolate, dried herbs and black coffee. A layered, dense and tightly textured palate. Lots of oomph behind it, even if the tannin are still pretty mouthcoating. This was the most aristocratic wine in the line-up and with a decent decant should drink beautifully now.

Surprisingly aged nose with tertiary aromatics, ripe and on average dark fruit and herbs in the mix. Not really nicely balanced, however.

Tasting note:A sweet aroma profile with red berry fruit, a bit of caramel and creme brûlée. Also nicely perfumed. Nicely juicy palate but not really dense nor complex, but already drinking pretty well with fewer edges than many older vintages.
