Introduction

Impromptu tasting of American wines. Cooked carnitas for tacos as a perfect American complimentary pairing.

Flight 1 - It was, generally, an open and pour your own evening (8 Notes)

  • 2008 Truchard Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Very nice. Clear, deep ruby with slight violet edge. Not showing a lot of signs of aging. The nose is dark fruit - blackberries with some light tertiary notes of tobacco and licorice. The mouth was round rich fruit and some round very soft tannins. Not particularly complex but very good wine.

  • 2015 Gramercy Cellars Syrah Columbia Valley

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Delicious. Clear, medium plus opacity, ruby with a touch of purple. No apparent aging. The mouth is round, but bright fruit. Well balanced with good acidity and structured well with fine but fully expressive tannins. Fruit is dark red and blue. The nose is consistent, with meaty red and blue fruits with some herbal and spicy notes.

  • 2016 Ultramarine Sparkling Rosé Heintz Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Beautiful pink/bronze color. Crystal clear and luminous. The nose is clearly red fruit - think raspberry - with yeasty and Smokey notes. On the palate, there are spicy bubbles, a great core of acidity and pure lemony raspberry fruit. Creamy in and long and clean out. Delicious.

  • 2004 Sine Qua Non Syrah Poker Face

    USA, California, Central Coast

We decanted for an hour before drinking. This is deep deep purple slanted ruby. Deeply opaque and showing very little signs of aging on the edges. The nose is a melange of dark berries and dark red fruits augmented by a smoky meatiness and spice cabinet. On the palate this is thick and full bodied, with a port-like creaminess, expressing - without doubt - powerful fruits. Finishes with very good length. This is pretty boozy and the fruit power are almost like drinking concentrated juice. Great but 1 glass is enough.

  • 2014 Saxum Broken Stones

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Dark and violet in color. Deep opacity. Dark, rich fruits like blackberries and concentrated blueberries are predominant on the nose and palate. There are nice meaty and spiced notes on the nose as well. The mouth fell was rich but remained bright because of a strong and precise acidity. You couldn’t feel the high alcohol in this. Well balanced. Super delicious.

  • 2012 Liquid Farm Chardonnay Four

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Clear and bright gold color with a touch of apparent aging. The nose is rich tropical fruits with smoky and wild herb notes. The palate is rich and fruity but not particularly fresh - a touch over ripe giving an bit of an oily feel to the downward side of the profile.

  • 2007 Antica Terra Pinot Noir

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Ruby, cloudy and light opacity with a touch garnet around the edges. On the nose is sour and red cherries with ash tray and cola notes. On the palate there is good acidity and the fruit darkens along the profile. This is American in style but if there is anything Burgundian in style it is not the nose but maybe the fruit concentration found in premier and grand crus. Well balanced and long finishing. Delicious.

  • 2005 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Ruby/Purple wine, clear and clean with no apparent bricking. The nose is dark fruits with some vegetal notes and eucalyptus like spiciness. On the palate, this is very well structure and interesting. Full silty tannins fill the mouth and give space to a well directed and well balanced and long finishing profile. A pleasure!

Closing

Delicious wines. American reputation for fruit forward rich wines held true. The cabs and chards held to the expected stereotypes. The Rhône blends were huge and unlike some of the restrained Rhône blends of some other producers I normally drink. The WA and OR wines did not disappoint and the Ultramarine star continues to shine brightly.
