Introduction

Wanted to do a side-by-side of the 1985 Las Cases and Clos du Marquis after reading that it was one of the few instances where the second wine (yes I know it is not a second wine bla bla) came close to the first. The Las Cases took a while to get going, but its superiority was never in doubt. Happy to have shared this with the number one Las Cases fan who previously shared all the Las Cases that I have had before, especially as he had not tried the 85 before.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Dominique Laurent Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Intra-Muros 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Started off in a more elegant and lighter fashion, with a spice note that led me to Vosne. The oak on Laurent wines integrates very well but it is always this spice note that made me guess Vosne every time I am blinded I think! High acid at the start that made me think 1996 but with the signature red fruit of 2002 emerged with time. Another very good Laurent wine again, but with air it became a little alcoholic and lost its structure.

  • 1985 Château Léoville Las Cases 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

A Las Cases that is good to go. A little green and tight at first but the nose and palate opened up to become a seductive and sensual wine. Less brooding than the 82 or 90, more similar stylistically to 86 in terms of its hedonistic pure fruit and balance, but less complete in terms of depth. Not sure how often the descriptor gorgeous is applied to Las Cases but it would be quite apt here.

  • 1985 Clos du Marquis 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Not close to the Las Cases in any way unfortunately. Very green on nose but much fresher on palate, bright, sappy red fruits but lacking in depth or complexity. Would have been good by itself but paled in comparison to the Las Cases.
