Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2016 Marie Courtin Champagne Efflorescence Extra Brut

    France, Champagne

Disgorged May 2022. 100% Pinot Noir, no dose. Elegant, middle weighted with raspberry, apple and a terrific purity. Both a spicy quality as well as the expected salinity for this cuvee. Overall I would call this gentle yet persistent, a good showing for Efflorescence.

  • 2018 Marie Courtin Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut [amphora]

    France, Champagne

Disgorged June 2021. No dose, this is 70% Chard and 30% Pinot Blanc, so think of this as Presence (the same composition) but this is done in amphora. And, there is a tiny bit of sulfur added here, but Presence is sans soufre so there are a few distinctions. This needs air, as the saline and pear are quite powerful, what Dominique calls a 'vertical' wine. The power is front to back, still tight but I did notice this changing in the glass as it warmed and breathed out. My note here is qualified as just information, as I didn't get to taste the wine with more air.

  • 2016 Marie Courtin Champagne Concordance Extra Brut

    France, Champagne

Disgorged January 2022. This bottle was as good as the one I had in the US last month, although I have to say this bottle showed with more power and intensity. No dose, 100% Pinot Noir, sans soufre, and what I learned about this cuvee from my visit is that this bottling gets what is arguably the top barrels. Since there is no sulfur here, Dominque wants the fruit to be at its best. This isn't to say that Efflorescence and Resonance are second rate, but it might be fair to say that Concordance gets the top cut from the Pinot Noir on the slope. Intensity, depth, bright acidity. Delicious texture, kind of honeyed with lime and berry. Can even taste some nectarine in this bottle and the acidity is the real energy of the wine. Excellent.

  • 2019 Marie Courtin Champagne Indulgence Extra Brut Rosé

    France, Champagne

Had to add to the database so not sure this is even released yet. This was disgorged just a few weeks ago. As always for me, this is a fascinating cuvee. I'd actually rather drink this still, as it shows as juicy, with strawberry, some soil tones, cherries, medium weight and still pretty linear. I suspect this will fill in with time as this is really just starting its voyage forward.

  • 2013 Marie Courtin Champagne Resonance Extra Brut

    France, Champagne

From the oenotheque. Disgorged 2017 so this saw quite a bit more time sur latte than normal, plus it's had another 5 years to age under cork. 100% Pinot Noir, no dose, from stainless steel. Just a little darkening of the color now starting to emerge, with white chocolate, lemon curd, grapefruit and my perception this is aging really well with a persistent lively acidity. Hey, Resonance at almost 10 years old, this is really evolving well. Bitchen, as I still have a bottle in my own cellar. What a treat!

  • 2010 Marie Courtin Champagne Eloquence Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut

    France, Champagne

From the oenotheque. An older bottle of Eloquence and I just think I was so enamored with the 2013 Resonance that I just didn't focus on this enough. Tangy with white citrus but overall this didn't wow me, especially with the Resonance next to it.

  • 2012 Marie Courtin Champagne Efflorescence Extra Brut

    France, Champagne

From the oenotheque. 100% Pinot Noir, no dosage. This bottle is holding up nicely at 10 years old. Good tension and structure with acidity and minerality both plentiful. Grapefruit, citrus rind and red apple. Got one of these left in my own cellar so it's good to see this vintage of Eff doing well.

  • 2020 Domaine Dame Jeanne Coteaux Bourguignons Alchémille

    France, Burgundy, Coteaux Bourguignons

From Jeanne, the daughter of Dominique Moreau of Marie Courtin. Been wanting to taste Jeanne's wines now for some time, and so was excited to see the wine on the table. Her plot is south of the Marie Courtin, about 20 mins away and just across the Champagne border into Burgundy. So, it's defined as that but it's truly just right off the Champagne line. 100% Chard. Lime pith, slate, pear and almond. Medium weight and delicate. She has been at this now for about 5 years, this is her third vintage of Alchemille, farmed organic (maybe biodynamic?) and for me drinking great. Worth looking in to the rest of her range.
