Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2007 Fratelli Brovia Barolo Garblèt Sué 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This needed a few hours to open up and uncoil into fleshy and balanced tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, violets, licorice, roasted herbs, cranberries, earth, tobacco, sour cherries, juniper berries, and leather tones. The Medium/full bodied feel is clearly youthful, but plush and balanced with silky, high tannins and crisp, high acidity. This opened up beautifully after some air, showing off great depth with plush tones across the nose and palate. This could still use a few years to fully settle in and turn up another gear.

  • 2007 G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This was chomping at the bit from the word go, showing off a savory and elegant side filling the glass with tones of violets, sour red cherries, licorice, roses, tar, raspberries, juniper berries, leather, currants, and some earth notes. The Medium/full bodied feel has a plush side with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is drinking extremely well right now with a dark red-fruited take and a silky structure that has a sneaky side on the back end.

  • 2007 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This was decanted at the beginning of the day and drunk in the early evening. The nose is just stunning and perfumed with deep tones of red cherries, rose petals, licorice, juniper berries, roasted herbs, morning dew, earth, and some sweet tobacco notes. The Medium/full bodied feel is lithe and elegant with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins. There is a lot of elegance and depth on this already as the tones meld together in harmony. This is showing very well in a primary way. Because of the vintage, there'll always be flesh on it, but I would really love to see where this goes with more age.

  • 2007 Massolino Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

There is a brawny quality to the nose with deep and layered tones of Licorice, black cherries, raspberries, violets, tar, earth, tobacco, dark red berries, juniper, and some liqueur tones. The Medium/full bodied feel is deep and plush with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is a flat out gorgeous wine. It is drinking on the earlier side, but is also shows off all of the reasons why I love Massolino's Vigna Rionda. It has heft and power without being unrestrained while showing off a deft touch on the palate with a lengthy finish.
