Introduction

time for the monthly catch up with it's usual opportunity to face plant the blind tasted wines...

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2018 DeMorgenzon Chardonnay Reserve

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    Served blind.
Slightly green, smells a little skinny, citrus, slight almond, a little wax. Juicy, alcohol warmth, textured, butter.
Nose initially says Chenin but the mouth says Chardonnay (when combined with the nose) - I got New World and, as the options were South Africa, Australia and New Zealand I went with South Africa. 2014 under cork.

  • 2014 Fox Run Vineyards Dry Riesling

    USA, New York, Finger Lakes

    Served blind.
medium minus intensity aromas shows stone fruit, smidge of peach, waxy notes. Medium plus intensity acidity, dry but with a smidge of residual sugar, textured grip, pretty stone fruit, apple, slight alcohol warmth.
    I guessed Austrian Riesling 2018

  • 2017 Ocean Eight Pinot Noir Aylward

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula

    Served blind.
Young, showing slight volatility, lots of jubey pretty raspberry and strawberry fruit, a little black cherry. Juicy, similar flavour profile, alcohol warmth, a little bitterness on the finish. Nice.
I guessed new world Pinot probably Martinborough 2017. The fruit profile combined with the alcohol warmth pushed me in that direction.

  • 2006 Domaine Auguste Clape Côtes du Rhône

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

    Served blind.
Concentrated, a little earth, leather, Brett, aniseed, baked black fruits on the nose. In the mouth medium plus intensity acidity, a little mid palate scoop, plenty of drying tannic grip, a little plum, aniseed and a fair heft of alcohol warmth on the finish.
I struggled with this one and ended up (because of the tannin and acid) sliding towards Italy, possibly Taurasi and about 2005

  • 2007 S.C. Pannell Nebbiolo

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

    Served blind.
concentrated plum, a little oak, sweet spice, plum lozenges, touch of toast. Drying tannins, juicy, slight alcohol warmth, similar fruit profile - that plum and plum lozenge persists with the tannins. Nice.
    I knew this was mine.

  • 2009 Pokolbin Estate Nebbiolo Belebula

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

    Served blind.
Caramel oak, dusty, herbaceous with, oddly, a little ripe plum. Medium plus intensity acidity is slightly sour, hard chewy tannins, fruit tea, pot pourri, quite skinny, okay.
    I knew this was mine

  • 2018 Domaine Tempier Bandol

    France, Provence, Bandol

    Served blind.
Jubey blackberry, spice, rocky minerality, slightly volatile, smidge of struck match. Medium plus intensity acidity, talc textured tannins, blackberry, fresh, slight alcohol warmth.
I guessed Rhone, good vintage...possibly 2015...bit of mud on the face on this one as I should have got this...

  • 2020 Bents Road La Petite Mort Saperavi Qvevri

    Australia, Queensland, Granite Belt

    Served blind.
Ripe, slightly dusty, a little medicinal, sweet spice, a little red fruit, slight wood glue. Medium plus acidity, the wood glue is more pronounced on the palate, medium plus intensity chalky tannins are very drying. Long maceration here and wild ferment gone bad.
I guessed some kind of whole bunch field blend aged in something neutral, possibly Swartland in South Africa though it could be from anywhere. Young as well, 2020.

  • 2012 Three Rivers Winery Cabernet Sauvignon

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

    Served blind.
Caramel oak, ripe blackberry and a little blackcurrant, chocolate, sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, plenty of tannins are chalky tand tight, black fruit, worked.
The polished nature makes me think US, California and the fruit profile leads me to Meritage and 2016

  • 1999 Casa Freschi Cabernet Sauvignon Profondo

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek

    Served blind.
Perfumed, sweetly fruited, black and red hued, leathery, earthy underpin, a little sweet spice and toasty note. Medium plus intensity acidity, the fruit coats the palate as do the tight, slightly woody, chalky tannins.
I found this a little anonymous so went with South Australian, Cabernet Shiraz blend, 2004

  • 2009 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Eight Iron Scarce Earth Single Vineyard

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    Served blind.
Reductive, black pepper, blackberry, plums, sweet spice. Thickly extracted. Medium plus intensity acidity, talc textured tannins black fruits, touch of residual sugar. Meh.
I went with Australian, Barossa, 2006. As part of the tasting someone made the observation that, as the acidity didn't feel adjusted and was prominent, this was more likely McLaren Vale...I shall have to explore this
