Introduction

The first two wines I purchased En Primeur...time to have a look at them once again...

Flight 1 - Lascombes (4 Notes)

I wanted these to be better than they were...

  • 2001 Château Lascombes

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Cedar, sweet spcie, wet blackcurrant, a little bonfire note, brambles and, with time, a touch of earth, plum and leather. Initially sourly juicy with grippy coarsely ground flour texture tannins, then a whisper of blackcurrant and black cherry with plums in support. A little cedar. Medium length. Hmm.

  • 2005 Château Lascombes

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Toasted oak, cream, slight nail varnish remover, black and red currant jam, cedar tends to cigar box, pyrazine here as well as a little spiced plum. Medium plus intensity acidity, tannins are chalky and drying, fruit struggles a little beneath this but shows through with some buttery creamy notes on the long finish. Time?

  • 2008 Château Lascombes

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Cedar, biscuit, touches of tomato leaf, wild blackcurrant, again a slight hint of acetone, toasted oak and sweet spice. With time in the glass a slightly meaty note joins the aromas accompanied by a little liqourice. In the mouth it's juicy, savoury and meaty. The tannins are more supporting here; though still quite drying and floury textured. Alcohol warmth is present but non intrusive, fruit a little muted. long. hmm

  • 2010 Château Lascombes

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Blackcurrant, black cherry, earth, cedar, sweet spice, slight alcohol prickle on the nose, some polished oak as well. On the palate it's juicy and savoury, the fruit present but in the background, tannins are drying on the gums, a little plum, black cherry and blackcurrant joined by some creamy notes. Still primary, time required.

Flight 2 - Belgrave (5 Notes)

Underrated...and long may it continue to do so...

  • 2000 Château Belgrave

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin. Initially aromas of slightly dried out blackcurrant, brambles, cream, leather, sweet spice, cedar, soy sauce, a little alcohol prickle, touch of pyrazine with time. Hmm, it's slightly sour on the palate and a little dried out, tannins are drying and grip the palate, the alcohol warmth on the finish, blackcurrant fruit is a little sharp. Hmm, not quite right. Drink up with something suitably fatty.

  • 2005 Château Belgrave

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin. Plums, red berry, blackcurrant, brambles, very Autumnal, a little sweet spice, fresh earth/mud. Almost a little plasticine note, slight violets. Savoury, juicy, cream and black hued fruits, tight, talc textured, slightly grainy tannins, long with a little liquorice joining. Good, but deserves food.

  • 2010 Château Belgrave

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin. Cream, a little Ribena tends to cassis, sweet spice, cedar, slight graphite; shows as a good luncheon claret from a good vintage on the nose. Juicy, fleshy, savoury black fruits are joined by liquorice and drying, talc textured tannins; all present long. Deeply pleasing, mid-week claret. Balanced, primary, very good

  • 2015 Château Belgrave

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin. Aromas of dark hued fruits; bramble, blackcurrant, plums, toast, fresh tilled earth, cream and polished oak. the fruit gets more jubey with time in the glass. Quite a primary nose. Juicy, savoury, tannins are present, slightly drying but surprisingly silky and soft (micro ox?). Fruit is similar to the nose; dark hued, broad on the palate joined by a little cream. Clean, primary. Okay. Time will help.

  • 2016 Château Belgrave

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin. Initially close on the nose; brooding with a sense of subdued power and density. Dark hued fruits, polished oak, toast, a little chocolate, fruit beings to delineate with time in the glass to show blackcurrant cordial backed by plums and (oddly?) slight strawberry jam. Ripe but not overtly so. In the mouth it's savoury, tight, a touch of yeast extract and tight tannins wrapped around a blackcurrant, plum and cassis core. All travel long. Still very young. Time, okay.

lascombes were a little disappointing, Belgraves pleasing
