94 Wine & Spirits A joyous Lascombes, this is the first vintage to hit stride since the US investment firm Colony Capital took over in 2001. It's a meaty wine draped in fragrant tannin, built for long aging. It's also an exuberant wine, in both the bright, red currant-scented fruit and the bristle of the tannin. A playfully complex flavor lasts for minutes, the wine still youthful and fresh four days after it was opened. Margaux chic. 93 Wine Spectator Dark in color, with an impressive nose of licorice, toasty oak, chocolate and blackberry. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very pretty and structured. 93 Connoisseurs' Guide This well-filled, impeccably balanced wine starts with aromas of cherries, sweet berries, tobacco leaves, rose petals, vanilla bean oak and black walnuts. Its lushness is more reminiscent of what we are finding from the St. Juliens than of the Margaux set, and in that regard, Lascombes comes up a bigtime success in this vintage. Its flavors have a "drink me now" quality but its underlying tannins speak to its ability to age, and there is every reason to expect more than a decade of growth. 91 Wine Enthusiast Lascombes is approaching the form its status as a second growth suggests. This wine is close, packed with dark fruits, figs and juicy black currant extract. The aftertaste has some bitterness, with layers of toast and spice coming through strongly.

Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of blackcurrant, a little sweet spice, toast, touch of herbaceous underpin, a little wet leaves, leather, cigar box, smells a little dilute. Sourly juicy; black fruit with a slight herbaceous underpin, drying emery paper tannins provides slightly leather. Oddly slight alcohol warmth on the finish, simple but rather nice.

Decanted for 1 1/2 hours. Medium to dark garnet colour. Black currant, dark cherry, blackberry, blueberry, light bell pepper, herbaceous notes, pencil shavings, graphite, earth, tobacco, and spices, with medium-level acidity, fine tannin, and good length. Classic profile, with average concentration and complexity. Thins out towards the end. Very earthy, with sandpapery tannins on day two. Will last for another ten years, but will not improve. Drink now.

nearly got there. Nose out of bottle stupendous, but this example didn't shine from the initially hoped depth. I will go again, as I think this bottle was a little flat. Sweet Margaux nose.

Coravin fun - Lascombes & Belgrave (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Cedar, sweet spcie, wet blackcurrant, a little bonfire note, brambles and, with time, a touch of earth, plum and leather. Initially sourly juicy with grippy coarsely ground flour texture tannins, then a whisper of blackcurrant and black cherry with plums in support. A little cedar. Medium length. Hmm.

Strident dark red nose of violet, aniseed. Palate has cherry, cedarwood and some animally character. The fruit is receding but overall the structure is holding up; some tannin remains and the acidity keeps things fresh. Maybe a little lacking in complexity from what I was hoping, but fine nevertheless.

2001 20-years on Commanderie dinner. The surprise of the night, the best bottle at our table. It started with a real wow nose that reminded us of Chateau Margaux. Dark and red fruit, lots of clove, spies, leather and dried meat. Polished, caressing palate, almost Burgundian. Long, aromatic finish. I think this is the best showing of a Lascombes I ever had.

Garnet color, not thick or inky. Dried berry fruit and cassis aromas. Some cedar and tobacco. Medium tannins, waning acidity. Flavours follow … a bit tired feeling. Round texture , medium length to the finish. Disappointing.

Decanted and served. Just entering its drinking window for our liking of Bordeaux ,the nose is superb. Classic and classy, elegant, dark fruited, light herby, mint, soft cedar and spice. The palate would have benefitted from a bit more decanting but still it's another great example of the great and unsung vintage 2001 is. Excellent wine and great value. 93-94 and pls give it some decanting prior to drinking.

Annual Coravin blitz - day three (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Leather, cigar box, a little liquorice, plums, black berries and spice, cedar with a little cassis in the background. More fleshy than juicy but doesn’t lack acidity. Flavourwise it mimics the nose, tannins are floury and persistent carrying a little fruit. nice.

Fully ready for prime time the wine is soft, round and on the floral, earthy, black cherry side of the style range. Not at all over oaked, as you find in numerous, subsequent vintages, the wine is medium/full bodied, delivering freshness and ripe, earthy, red fruits in the finish.

The wine looks brick colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like red currant and black currant (cassis). It tastes like blueberry, strawberry, blackberry and black currant (cassis). The body is medium. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.
Harmoniously balanced with ideal finesse at this age. A little funk and wet cellar earth on the nose, with blackberry and woody juniper notes - just hints of the classic Bordeaux cedar. Pure, gentle fruit with a pleasing, subtle richness in a medium weight body. A gentle, silky finish, again with a juniper note. Drinking really well now, would not wait much longer. Not surprisingly, a wine that beautifully complements food with its finesse - in our case NY strip with bountiful mushrooms on the side.

Eher dunkel, schwarze Johannisbeere, Schwarzkirsche, Spice Box, etwas Meersaum, Graphit, Margaux-Parfum. Drink up.

took to dinner with chums. Decanted and good 90 minutes before consumption. it's quite dense. Stood up well to rib eye steak and roast spuds. Earlier notes apply. The last bottle from the case will be allowed to descend into old age I think...this is still only just getting tertiary notes so the drinking window here is quite short.

Coravin fun - Home with the Lascombes (Day Street, Marrickville): From Coravin. Just getting those first forest floor, mushroom notes on the nose to go with biscuit, savoury black currant, cherry and berry and some sweet oak and spice. with time there is a little leatheryness as well. On the palate there are still plentiful talc textured tannins and juicy acidity. Quite broad and fleshy fruit, slight liquorice notes here as well. Long with slight alcohol warmth that is non-intrusive and a touch of spice and astringency. pleasant enough but not really up to the 85 or 90.

I love Lascombes. It's so silky at this point and aromatic. Similar to other recent notes. This was a PnP over 2+ hrs and I didn't notice much change over the two hours. Pretty aromatically expressive upon open. If you are used to Cali bombs you should prepare yourself for a different experience. This is 13% and it shows in the body. In balance, it is a total silk show, tannins so fine and powdery, almost hidden, a blast to smell.

Ready for consumption. Not in any danger of fading or drying out anytime soon, however.
Very nice nose & color. Rather simplistic on the palate with a disappointingly short finish. The oak is a bit too heavy for my taste. Still, a very good wine in the classic Margaux style.

Glad we decanted, as there was plenty of sediment. Good dark fruit, just a hint of flowers and anise. Wine was still pretty dark which made me think I had opened it too soon. Plenty of structure, dark fruits and medium tannins confirmed my suspicions, as did the fact the wine was much better 2 and 1/2 hours after decant than 1 hour. Even with the tannins still present, the wine was starting to smooth out. Probably peaking in 2019 or so.

Celebration of job change meant that this was elected for a nice evening with the family where fresh Lammecarrè as a partner.
First a little worried about the low scores after release in 2005. But I was pleasantly surprised!
Fine cork, good fruit and fullness at first taste, but sensed that this wine not needed time in the decanter. Had the wine in a open bottle about 1 1/2 hours and about 15 min in the glass. Perfect temperature. 17`ish I think.
Nice aroma with hints of blackberry, black currant, pepper and oak. Medium body, medium length with flavors of blackberry, hints of cherry, pepper, Vanillia and pencil tip (yes, finally I got used this term - quite frankly - i felt the flavor).
The designation of Margaux's is often "soft, elegant and feminine." I would definitely call this something soft and certainly an elegant wine. Feminine I am however unsure. This wine is probably the slightly shy cute girl, who turns out eventually also have "smartness" with her. I think it is higher Merlot percentages in this, but i felt the great Cabernet grape also, mixing this into a great beauty.
I've heard that the 01`vintage in Bordeaux is often referred to as a "sleepers vintage". I hear through several, they've had some very positive surprises with 01 vintage.
I endorse this with this wine - pleasantly surprised - much better than 99 vintage of Ch.Lascombes. I think this wine is about peak. Drink it now. Turns with well deserved 93 points.

Pulled from a 55 degree cellar where it's sat for the last six years: opened and stood up for an hour to allow the sediment to settle, after which it was decanted for 30 minutes. Like so many of the upper echelon Classed Bordeaux's, the rich aromas emanated from the decanter for a couple of feet. Medium plus bodied without signs if bricking. As earlier indicated earlier, classic Bordeaux aromas and flavors of spicy red currants, cassis, mocha, sweet plums, mixed dry red berries, pencil lead, minerals, and some wonderfully terroir inspired earthiness. Beautifully balanced, with a well integrated tannic structure, and a silky mouthfeel. Long, persistent finish.
This is drinking at peak and should easily drink well for another 8-10 years if stored properly. Disagree with the suggested community drinking window.

CT Tasting Group (Steve's House): Tasted Blind - Group's WOTN / My WOTN - Dark maroon in the glass showing earthy tones and a distinctive nose of smoked meat. Surprisingly sweet on the attack, went on the show a dark / earthy component and blue fruit on the finish. Full bodied and very smooth. The finish was complimented by a small amount of powdery tannins, which were the only ones to be found. Almost rhone-like (CdR) is some contexts.
Very good - Drink now or hold.

Aromas of bramble, leather, cigar box, autumnal leaves, no obvious farmyard or horse shit but distinctly Bordeaux...touches of licorice here for me as well. In the mouth flavours of licorice, spice, muted savoury bramble/blackcurrant. Slightly chalky but fine tannin on the mid palate and, for me, touches of mint. Medium plus length. The nose offers more than the mouth. Hmm

I rated this the same as the '00 Lascombes. The two wines could not have been more different. Where the '00 was smooth and silky, the '01 was bolder, bigger and more fruit forward. The '00 evidenced the earth and woody notes I expect from this old world wine. The '01 was more reminiscent of a new world style. The '01 was a deep garnet in color and the nose was a bit green and musty as would be expected but what a difference on the palate.
Bordeaux 2001 Blind Tasting (+ two 2000s): Compact, dense red. In the nose, this tight, rather restrained, fairly clear, a bit monolithic. Not bad, but then it gets sweeter and sweeter with Crème de Cassis and cherry liqueur notes. On the palate, it's really sweet, a bit hot, quite hot actually. Short. Not my style and doesn't have much to do with Margaux in my view.

Decanted for two hours after straining through a funnel – lots of sediment. Still dark purple in colour though a bit more ruby than my last bottle. The nose showed of forest floor and mushrooms, overripe blackcurrant and some spice. The mouth feel and flavour were - medium intensity and body. The finish was medium to long and balanced. I really enjoyed this bottle of wine. I will keep my two remaining bottles until towards the end of the drinking window (2016+) just to push the boundaries of development to see what happens.

Beautiful and rustic bouquet with cassis, cedar, tobacco and sweet spices. On the palate cassis as well. Creamy. Good acidity. Soft and round, but also a bit sticky tannin. A classical Claret. Already beautiful and mature, but it will evolve for the better over the next two years or so and will still be great around 2018.

A ridiculous wine that age does not become. Winemaking by numbers: I can just imagine the dream team thinking "oak", "concentration", "spice", "fruit", with heavy ticks in each box. Ten years on or so, the fruit is drying fast, the oak is still over-dominant, the concentration is of the wrong flavours and aromas. Awful though Lascombes used to be, it was still better than this, you could at least taste some sort of fruit, even if it was often unripe. Unless you really want a Margaux tasting of coffee, there are several great Margaux in 2001 offering a lot more. I hope the new owners are more sensitive to the terroir and not out to make a fast buck as Colony obviously were. The real question of course is how they managed to fool several top critics with this sort of rubbish.

Offline at Suzette's. Maybe slightly fruit forward in comparison with some of the other wines of the night but I enjoyed that fact. Very nice dark fruit flavors with some light spice and smoke. Medium finish. I believe it may have been decanted in advance and the tannins were smoothed out quite a bit.

Opened by BillHike. A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Medium red purple color. Creamy wine. Medium to full bodied. Dark fruit notes. Still showing on the young side. A outstanding wine but not on the same level as the 2003 and especially the 2005 or 2009. 90 points.

Decanted for an hour prior to filtering back into the open bottle for a further two hours rest. Surprised at how dark purple and youthful this wine looked. I seemed to remember the bottle that I drank a year ago had a bit more browning around the rim. Last time out I scored the wine 92 points, this time I think the wine may have gone to sleep. At first a little shy on the nose but typical Bordeaux aroma, did get a hint of leather and chocolate coming through. Taste of blackberry and dark fruits with balanced tannins, medium to short finish. Will drink next bottle in a year or so.

Still quite purple in colour though slight movement towards ruby now. The nose showed toast, muted blackcurrant and some spice. The mouthfeel and flavour were both quite light - medium minus flavour intensity and body - and, though the wine was beautifully balanced and obviously well made, it feels a little dumb at the moment. Again I picked up the toastiness which was forming into a slight mocha characteristic over black fruit and spice. I will reserve the other bottles for a few years to see if some more tertiary characteristics develop.

Tasted Spring 2008. Light red fruit profile, wood; overall rather insubstantial. Not bad, but not really impressed either. I couldn't really get away with explaining it away as being elegant... rather it's just somewhat anemic (probably macrocytic given the alcohol). A "paint by numbers" kind of wine; not my thing. Not worth the price that was being charged (60 range)

Decanted for 2 hours. At first, it was a bit shy on the nose and palate even being decanted for 2 hours prior to consuming it. However, it started to change after the 3rd hour when it became more prominent on the nose unveiling very nice aromas of bluberries, blackberries, rosemary, toasted oak and expresso. On the palate, it's very elegant, balanced with nice tannins and medium-long aftertaste....very classy. It's reasonably accessible now, but it still doesn't show its best. It has a long life ahead...I would wait 5 more years to open it. Excellent!

Another day another bottle from the same case...this one is far nicer, with vanilla, savoury black currant jelly and prune characteristics coming through. Some tobacco and a good mouth feel. Moderately coarse tannins but nice none the less nice long finish. Other things that make themselves apparent are hay, clover, mocha and marzipan to a lesser extent. Nose: initially alcohol heat then nettles, cat pee, blackcurrant, leather and quite gamey. After a while in the glass started to reveal smoky bonfire and coffee Mouth: tannin, dry, bit of a mid scoop and a not too long finish. Again, after a while in the glass some unripe plum and mocha characteristics. Second bottle from the case. Not the best bordeaux I've tasted but, by a fair margin, not the worst.

Tasted against the 99 which as anticipated was easy match after the massive turnaround in quality from 00 vintage. Colour deep red with a very layered and perfumed nose. Lots of fruit beautifully balanced in the mouth. This wine is drinking very well now with a medium+ finish, still offering mouthdrying tannins and consentrated yet delicate fruit. I have great expextations for my last bottle of this wine which I think will stilll go along way from here.

Wonderful claret. Just beautiful. Springs straight to life and yet it improves in the glass. Chocolate, cassis, a hint of exotic spices, and graphite are some of the aromatics. The palate is just gorgeous, with a mouth-coating texture and an impecable balance and elegance. The finish goes on for more than two minutes. And yet, it is restrained and elegant, with no hard edges. Drink now and in the next 5 years.

2001 Chateau Lascombes is a lovely effort. Aromas of pencil shavings and dark fruits are quite obvious. Very well balanced on the palette with notes of coffee and blueberry. Combines power and elegance, and represents Margaux very well. Drink over the next 5 years I'd say.

Opaque purple color. Nose of fresh dark berries. Tastes of blackberry, blackcurrant, chocolate, violet, earth and raspberry. A bit heavy handed with the French oak. Medium bodied. Lush in the mouth with an upfront explosion of dark fruit, still showing some firming tannins. Popped and poured. Amazing wine right out of the gate. Great Bordeaux typicity and none of the spoofilation I was fearful of encountering. Soaring nose of cigar box, black currant, earth, and floral aromas. Nice and long on the palate with good grip and sturdy structure, but definitely drinking great right now. Finishes text-book. Just a pleasure to drink. Served with pan-roasted grass-fed ribeyes in a cognac peppercorn sauce, lacinato kale and beets.

No decant, but open a couple hours. Deep purple color. Classic Bordeaux nose shows leather, earthy smoke, smoked meats, chocolate, cedar and cassis. Palate follows with leather, tobacco, chocolate and cherries, with bell peppers and cedar arriving on the midpalate and firm tannins coming in on the medium finish. This is a really nice wine drinking well right now, with good balance and extraction and the tannic structure to age for awhile yet. Excellent Margaux at a good price. 5+13+16+7.

This bottle was decanted for two hours before drinking. Deep red in color, almost black. Nose of black cherry, cedar and thyme with some grassy and barnyardy elements. On the palate: balanced acid and fruit, quite a bit of tannin and a long sweet finish. The flavors came and went -- roasted meats, wild herbs and berries. After about four hours I detected a note of creme brulée on the finish. Very nice. Interestingly, the last time I tried a bottle of this it was in a warmer condition and without decanting; almost none of the fruit came out, and the flavor tended much more towards leather.

Wine & Spirits
A joyous Lascombes, this is the first vintage to hit stride since the US investment firm Colony Capital took over in 2001.
93
Wine Spectator
Dark in color, with an impressive nose of licorice, toasty oak, chocolate and blackberry. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very pretty and structured.

Connoisseurs' Guide
This well-filled, impeccably balanced wine starts with aromas of cherries, sweet berries, tobacco leaves, rose petals, vanilla bean oak and black walnuts.
91
Wine Enthusiast
Lascombes is approaching the form its status as a second growth suggests. This wine is close, packed with dark fruits, figs and juicy black currant extract. The aftertaste has some bitterness, with layers of toast and spice coming through strongly.

Drink now.

Again I picked up the toastiness which was forming into a slight mocha characteristic over black fruit and spice. I will reserve the other bottles for a few years to see if some more tertiary characteristics develop.

Fantastische wijn. Mooie fijne neus. Zeker als de wijn iets langer in het glas staat. Veel donker fruit nog, drop, leer. Elegante, verfijnde smaak: donker fruit, drop, leer, mooie droge tannines en een plezierig zuurtje. De wijn is nu heel mooi in balans!

I'm not totally sure, but it seems cooked. The nose was fine but the wine has been stripped of all weight on the palate and whatever else left is obscured by unnaturally high acidity. :(

(at Arnoldo's) if it looks like a Bordeaux, smells like a Bordeaux and tastes like a Bordeaux - it's surely Bordeaux. Pleasant aroma; medium-bodied, tannic, balanced, elegant, enjoyable.

Excellent!

Classic Bordeaux. Cedar scented, slight floral note. Blackcurrent, cigarbox and ripe black sift fruits. Medium acidity and velvety tannins. Just coming into its drinking window but very well placed with all the right components. Should be very nice for several years and for the money, very good everyday claret.

deep ruby, nose comprises black currant, cassis, earth and licorice with very slight floral, smooth tannin before decant, full bodied, intense palate dominated by minerals, earthy, and black fruits, fairly long finish, a little bit disappointed on the weak intensity of the nose, maybe the bottle was badly kept

Very good. Intense, complex nose, not really showing secondary notes yet. Medium+ bodied, excellent balance, tannins are quite silky. Drinking very well now, but will surely last for 10+ more years.

Complex will full of flower, blackcurrent and flavours. However, this wine is still tight and tannic, showed some cigar box aroma after 3 hours airing. This is good but obviously still not wake up. Will try again 2 years later.

Note - opened and compared with two other Bordeaux's; Belgrave 2000 and Les Forts de Latour 2002.

Nose: initially alcohol heat then nettles, cat pee, blackcurrant, leather and quite gamey. After a while in the glass started to reveal smoky bonfire and coffee
Mouth: tannin, dry, bit of a mid scoop and a not too long finish.

Good acidity and freshness. Nice depth and complexity on the finish. Stylistically leaning a bit towards the new world but unmistakably left bank Bordeaux. Very enjoyable. 13% alcohol.

Decanted for 2 hrs. Dark ruby red color. Big syrupy nose of blackberry, chocolate, lead pencil, cedar and spice....unmistakably Bordeaux. Lush in the mouth with an upfront explosion of dark fruit, still showing some firming tannins. The finish is nice but nothing like the upfront explosion....maybe the tannins are clamping it down a bit?....time will tell.
