Our traditional wine, blended from our 7 plots on Mont Brouilly. Grape varieties : A majority of white-juiced Gamay noir, but also some Chardonnay to provide finesse. Terroir : Our seven plots of Côte de Brouilly all lie on the east, south, and west flanks of Mont Brouilly. Each of these plots is distinguished by its orientation or its position on the slope, and each brings its share of complexity to this wine. The soils are dominated by the “blue stone“ (Metadiorite), stonier for the highest plots and more clayey for those nearer the foot of the hill Cultivation : The vines are at a density of 7,000–9,000 vines/ha laid out with grassed and flower strips for the diversification of the flora and to let our small, light tractors through, we alternate tilling with controlled natural grassing. Hand-picking, converting to organic, Terra Vitis certified for 10 years. Vinification : Partly in whole bunches in our hillside cellars and matured in oak tuns for 7 months. Blending : performed in the Spring on finished wines. The wine in this blend comes from the following plots: Clos Bertrand, La Chapelle, Les Griottes, Godefroy, L’Héronde, Henri, and Les Fournelles. -//- The wine shows bright profile, fresh red cherries, very fragrant, a touchy cinnamon candy, oak, clove. The palate is fresh, juicy, high acidity, red cherry and currant, tight tannins (for Gamay), 13.50%, straightforward, sour cherry flavoured medium finish
The château’s historic walled vineyard Grape varieties : A majority of white-juiced Gamay noir, but also a few Chardonnay vines that add finesse (1%) Terroir : This is Château Thivin’s historic vineyard, it was already planted with vines in the 14th century, as shown by an inscription on the lintel of a small cave that reads “1383”. This walled vineyard at the foot of Mont Brouilly face south-west; the soil is deeper and a proportion of pink granite is mixed with the magmatic rock of the hill. Cultivation : The vines are at a density of 7,000 vines/ha laid out with grassed and flower strips for the diversification of the flora and to let our small, light tractors through. We alternate tilling with controlled natural grassing. In Winter, a small herd of sheep graze in the walled vineyard. The grapes are picked exclusively by hand. Vinification : Partially stripped, grid maceration for 10–14 days in our hillside cellars, maturing in oak tuns for 7–9 months. -//- The wine shows impressive breadth in the nose, dark fruit with sour cherry hints that offer freshness, a few olive, licorice and oak notes. Palate shows density, feels fresher than the nose due to elevated acidity, oak notes, red fruit, cherry, sour cherry, currant. There are also a few white peach notes, tight tannins, same alcohol 13.50% but feels a bit hot, mineral, medium finish. Damn !!
Our prestige wine, in homage to Zaccharie Geoffray, comes from a selection of our best terroirs and is matured for 11 months in barrels. Grape Varieties : Old white-juiced Gamay Noir vines, average age: 50 years Terroir : An area of the Côte de Brouilly appellation on the slopes of Colline de Brouilly, with a fine, well-drained soil, stones of igneous origin (Diorite Porphyry) mixed with clay, east- and south-facing Cultivation : Vines planted at a high density of 9–10,000 vines/ha, pruned into low goblets, traditional in crus Ground grassed and partly flowered for Terra Vitis reasoned agriculture. A great many insects are currently repopulating our vineyards. We use “green picking” in order to obtain a lower yield that is properly ripe and concentrated. Vinification : Hand-picking in small trays to preserve the grape, vinification 13–15 days, pneumatic pressing, 1/10 matured in new barrels, the rest in 1–5-year-old barrels. This wine has developed for 9 months in casks. Blending : This wine comes from the blending of our oldest vines; plots at La Chapelle in the south and Godefroy in the east. -//- Beautiful, extrovert, voluptuous, full on ripe fruit, blue and black cherries, overripe strawberries, floral notes, decadent, welcoming old-school cinnamon candy perfume The wine shows powerful palate, high acidity, tight chalky tannins, this needs years to settle down, red and blue berries, long finish. Outstanding quality, this is obviously the finest of them all and it will be glorious at some point down the road, it just needs a bit of time
Our “solar” plot that benefits from a fine south-east-facing position on steep slopes. Grape varieites : A majority of white-juiced Gamay noir and a few Chardonnay vines that add finesse (1–2%) Terroir : 5 ha south-facing vineyard half-way up the hillside; already famous in the 17th century, as Louvet wrote in his History of the Beaujolais Wine Region written in 1635: “on the hill of Brulhié (Brouilly), in the parish of Oudenas (Odenas) […] which slope or hill bears the best wines of the region”. Shallow soil over blue stones, a magmatic rock also called Metadiorite. Cultivation : The vines are at a density of 7,000 vines/ha laid out with grassed and flower strips for the diversification of the flora and to let our small, light tractors through, we alternate tilling with controlled natural grassing. Hand-picking. Converting to Organic, Terra Vitis certified for 12 years Vinification : The grapes are wholly picked by hand and vinified partly in whole bunches in our hillside cellars, whose successive levels allow us to make maximum use of gravity, so as to avoid using either pumps or conveyors for the grapes. After pressing, the wine is matured in oak tuns for 7–9 months. -//- The wine shows medium intensity, the fruit is darker and riper, cherries, more earthy and oaky than 7 vignes. In the palate, the wine shows the same flavor profile, dark fruit, tight tannins, 13.50%, chocolate (!) notes, the oak us more upfront, medium acidity, a touch leathery, long finish. impressive
