Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2008 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut Rosé 96 Points

    France, Champagne

Pale pink. Slightly coiled nose displaying concentrated red fruit with a hint of red, raspberry sold, a hint of strawberry, yellow cherry, lemon curd, rose, brioche, sweet spices and crushed rocks. Exceptional concentration, slightly coiled but intense red and yellow fruit, very fine generous mousse, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral, and a long slightly coiled red and yellow fruit driven finish. This is a coiled example.

Beautiful light color. Expressive nose displaying succulent white and yellow fruit, apple, lemon curd, a hint of pineapple, a hint of flint and light honey and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered succulent yellow fruit with a hint of white, oily and dense but also good precision and freshness, bright acidity, strong mineral, and a long generous yellow fruit driven mineral finish. Drinking beautifully.

  • 2005 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 97 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Youthful expressive nose displaying super concentrated ripe dark red fruit, cherry liqueur, blackberry liqueur, a hint of licorice, strong tobacco, leather, dark caramel, sap, garrigue, sweet spices and mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated dark fruit, rich, sweet and deeply toned, but also beautiful detail and balance, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long intense dark fruit driven finish with tobacco and garrigue at the end. This remains incredibly youthful. One of the most concentrated Rayas with all telltale signs of great Rayas, tobacco, leather and licorice. Rayas wines are so unique that I can often correctly identify them.

  • 2000 Château Cheval Blanc 98 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

RJ proposes to open the 09 DRC GE. I really want to find out how the 00 CB evolving. I always forget that the 98 is the exotic expressive one. Incredibly youthful but expressive nose displaying super concentrated black fruit, blackberry liqueur, crème de cassis, a hint of licorice, sap, ink, lavender, liquid smoke and limestone. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of very youthful black fruit, rich and dense but also very fluid, bright acidity and strong mineral, very fine tannins and a long intense black fruit driven finish with a hint of licorice at the end. This is evolving at a glacial pace but unlike the 86 Mouton at the similar stage, still quite enjoyable with the ample fruit. This may be like the 47 Cheval Blanc one day but not as ripe, i.e. Port like.

  • 2010 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Expressive nose displaying luxurious dark red fruit, dark cherry, raspberry, sous bois, rose, sap, perfume, light caramel, sweet spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered dark red fruit, sweet and generous, exceptional balance and detail, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long sweet dark fruit driven finish with rose, caramel and sous bois at the end. This is a beautiful complex Chambertin with generous fruit. Since 2005 when Erwan took over the Domaine, Faiveley has been making excellent wines. My impression is that the Faiveley wines do not get the recognition they deserve. It would be fascinating to include this in a blind tasting with the 10 Rousseau and Mortet Chambertin.
