Introduction

2 great friends visiting for the weekend along with some local wine buddies; unexpectedly realized it was the Super Bowl which none of us were really paying attention to. That said it was a fabulous 3 days of great company, food, and wines.

Flight 1 - Friday night (9 Notes)

Friday after work and friends flying in we threw together some lamb chops with herbs and some with cross over spice; parmesan polenta and a charcuterie board alongside an excellent salad; focus of the night was Burgundy and in particular wanted to drink a couple of fine Volnay's as one of my friends very much likes this village. Lafarge was the wine of the night by some margin, but many were excellent. The '69 Madeira was special as it was one of my great friends birth year and a surprise to him.

Flight 2 - Small plates and lots of wine on Saturday (10 Notes)

Food this night included herbed and seared halibut, sous vide and then seared ribeye, Moroccan spiced lamb meatballs, parmesan risotto, charcuterie, and arugula and avocado salad. The quality of the wines on this night was special; many great producers, but almost all of the wines showed brilliantly which doesn't always happen; the Conterno and the Chave were particularly stellar and I was blown away by the Roulot.

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvee Edition 169eme

    France, Champagne

While this was certainly good and enjoyed by all, it was clearly too young for me; nice and fresh on the nose, but never really opened up and the palate was still leaning into the austere spectrum. Great potential but needs another 5ish years at least.

  • 2017 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

I always enjoy Louis Michel and this Vaudesir was no exception. Very classic Chablis nose of green apple, citrus, iodine, oyster shell and some pear. More floral with air. Fresh and incisive on the palate, but with definite grand cru density. Good stuff and excellent value.

  • 2019 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Bouchères

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

First Roulot 1er cru for me and it was a head turner. The nose was super powerful and exquisite; ripe orchard fruits, crushed stone, orchard blossoms, citrus peel, a hint of spice. Great concentration and power on the palate, but in a very focused and driven package; I seemed to appreciate this more than most at the table, but I found it to be a show stopper. I wish I could drink it more often...

  • 1959 Maison Lebègue-Bichot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

This was slightly corked; not obvious, but it made the nose flat and there was just a hint of chlorine; too bad because the palate was still quite intact with rich fruit and spice notes alongside earthy sous bois. Always a gamble buying something this old...

  • 1999 Ridge Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

This was excellent. Served with sous vide ribeye; decanted for 90 min; beautiful rich dark fruit, violet, damp earth and tobacco, just a tiny hint of sweet spice; the balance and elegance on the palate is first rate. Its in a good spot right now, but has loads of time ahead especially if you like older cabernet notes as this was still definitely fruit driven.

  • 2007 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This was incredible; maybe the wine of the night in a line up of very tough competition; more open than I expected with super fresh red fruits, anise, mint, cigar box, floral and orange peel. A fabulous and explosive nose; the palate was also fully dialed, the density of the fruit soaked up the tannins so it did not feel that structured at all. Long, balanced and simply excellent. A good reminder as to why I buy Roberto Conterno's wines.

  • 2006 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Excellent showing of this; better than I remember with an explosive nose of black fruit and purple flowers. With air a bit of pepper and olive, but mostly just fruit and floral. The palate however remained elegant and fresh, great balance, superb concentration. A fabulous bottle of Chave.

  • 2008 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate

USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

This was excellent and while still quite young and primary it is starting to come into an early drinking window; classic Spottswoode with beautiful blueberry and cassis alongside floral and spice notes; elegant and yet still powerful. And really just delicious.

  • 2019 00 Wines Chardonnay VGW

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

This bottle was better than my last; opened up quickly after a decant, beautiful ripe pear, red apple, a hint of baked lemon; floral and with almost and almond/marzipan note; great density on the palate, but feels fresh and vibrant as well. Great stuff.

  • 2015 Château d'Yquem

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

First sample of this vintage and while I see potential, it needs time; it was thicker and a bit too voluptuous for me at this stage; let's be clear I enjoyed it and it was incredibly delicious, but I just wanted a little more energy. At this stage I'd say I prefer the '11 and '13, but I think this will be a longer ager and likely surpass them at some point. Always a treat to drink Yquem.

Flight 3 - Super Bowl Sunday (7 Notes)

My buddies wanted to make a classic style super bowl meal so we went with philly cheese steaks and chips and guac; the cheese steaks were excellent; thinly sliced ribeye with caramelized onions; not something I pair wine with regularly, but the Cote Rotie was particularly good with it as was the Williams Selyem; a fun and relaxing evening.

Closing

Overall the quality of the wines and how well they showed was excellent. Can't wait for the next gathering.
