Chez Newman

2 great friends visiting for the weekend along with some local wine buddies; unexpectedly realized it was the Super Bowl which none of us were really paying attention to. That said it was a fabulous 3 days of great company, food, and wines.
Friday after work and friends flying in we threw together some lamb chops with herbs and some with cross over spice; parmesan polenta and a charcuterie board alongside an excellent salad; focus of the night was Burgundy and in particular wanted to drink a couple of fine Volnay's as one of my friends very much likes this village. Lafarge was the wine of the night by some margin, but many were excellent. The '69 Madeira was special as it was one of my great friends birth year and a surprise to him.
Food this night included herbed and seared halibut, sous vide and then seared ribeye, Moroccan spiced lamb meatballs, parmesan risotto, charcuterie, and arugula and avocado salad. The quality of the wines on this night was special; many great producers, but almost all of the wines showed brilliantly which doesn't always happen; the Conterno and the Chave were particularly stellar and I was blown away by the Roulot.
My buddies wanted to make a classic style super bowl meal so we went with philly cheese steaks and chips and guac; the cheese steaks were excellent; thinly sliced ribeye with caramelized onions; not something I pair wine with regularly, but the Cote Rotie was particularly good with it as was the Williams Selyem; a fun and relaxing evening.
Overall the quality of the wines and how well they showed was excellent. Can't wait for the next gathering.
2002 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Nicolas François
France, Champagne
This was excellent; starting to develop some aged notes that lend complexity, but with beautiful fruit and texture still. Probably nearing its peak for me.

2016 Domaine Jean Chartron Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Pucelle
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
This was excellent; delicious ripe orchard fruits, gardenia, lemon peel, a hint of mineral and sweet spice. Beautiful balance on the palate with excellent density, rounded as you would expect from Pucelles, but still with good energy. One of the best '16 whites I've had.

2009 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
A stunning wine that is still in its infancy. The nose is phenomenal and explodes out of the glass so that it is easy to smell from 5 feet away! Essence of Volnay here with beautiful bright red fruits, floral notes, and a mineral tinge. The palate has great intensity and power, yet still feels balanced and elegant. No hints of heat, just pure fruit and a driving mineral finish. Exquisite stuff. Clearly the wine of the night for me and maybe the wine of the whole weekend!

2005 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
This was more tertiary than I expected; very much forest floor and earth driven without a lot of fruit or floral notes. Still tannic, but starting to resolve and has reasonable balance. I'm not totally convinced this is going to come around, but we will see.

2009 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
This was delicious; just pure pleasure in a classic Chambolle package; ripe red fruits, some mineral and floral notes, a bit of orange zest; still quite primary, but so fun and tasty to drink it disappears quickly!

2016 Domaine Michel Gros Vosne-Romanée
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Good quality village Vosne. Still young, but with nice ripe darker fruits, plenty of spice notes. Good concentration and easy to enjoy.

2019 Abbott Claim Pinot Noir Orientate
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
This was a baby and needs more time; served alongside older vintages of Burgundy which didn't do it any favors; this stood out because it was so young; the potential is there, but there is a bit of wood that needs to integrate and it needs to just calm down a little. I'd wait a minimum of 3 years before trying again.

2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
All three bottles of this have been delicious. Pure fruit, easy to drink, no rusticity or anything that seemed off to me. Still young really.

1969 D'Oliveiras Madeira Sercial
Portugal, Madeira
Another excellent bottle of this; still with loads of time, but this was really tasty and enjoyed by all who drank it. Chocolate, toasted walnut, candied citrus peel, allspice. Rich and warming, but with the classic acidity of Sercial. Delicious and a great friends birth year which is always fun!
