Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 79 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Dense ruby. Flatter nose than the Terre R alongside. More savoury and almost something a little rusty metallic. Dense, slightly cloudy on the attack. Broad. Dry finish. Very dry in fact, and increasingly so with air. No, this doesn’t float my boat. *

  • 2003 Tertre Rôteboeuf 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Deep ruby. Plummy nose with some chocolate. Dark red fruit. A bit more focus here, energy too, but also a touch more heat on the finish. More line. The sense of abv does build with air. One could drink a glass of this though. ***

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Giscours 83 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Dense ruby. Red fruit and initially a touch of swimming pool that does lift quite quickly. A little flat and smokey. Dense and quite sturdy on the attack. Some red fruit poking through. Some. Dry finish. More floral with air and really quite an attractive nose with violet florality. Increasingly dry on the palate though. One to sniff. **

  • 2003 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

US slip label. Bright ruby. Richer and darker on the nose. Quite bright on the attack, though a density behind it.Again, not elegant other than in relative terms. Quite chewy on the finish but it is red fruited.***

  • 2003 Château Sociando-Mallet 74 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Dense and slightly murky. Similar on the nose. Savoury and meaty. It ain’t elegant. Needs food, but even then it’s a struggle. Sludgy. No. Others appear to have liked it better.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Batailley 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dense ruby. A little brighter and redder fruited on the nose. Actually quite elegant on the attack though there’s some obvious heat on the finish. Best one of these so far. Bare ***

  • 2003 Château Duhart-Milon 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dense ruby. Dusty blackberry nose. Dark red to black fruit. A density and a little heat. Roasted coffee coming through on the nose. It’s interesting but as with all these wines there’s a big difference between being able to drink a glass and wanting to. **1/2

  • 2003 Château Pontet-Canet 83 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dense ruby. Almost purple at the core. Like a barrel sample when opened and double decanted, three and a half hours later it has relaxed a little. Dark red fruit with some blackberry. Quite an astringency on the finish. This was better a decade ago. **

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Lafon-Rochet 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Dense ruby. Blackberry and cream on the nose. Dense on the attack. Quite plush. Full with a density but also balance. Perhaps a touch gloopy. Starting to dry a bit after ten minutes or so. Bare ***

  • 2003 Château Cos d'Estournel 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Dense ruby. Blackberry, blackcurrant and a touch of smoke on the nose. Thick and dense but fruit to cover the structure for me. A touch of exuberance. Floral and attractive on the nose. Very drinkable in small sips. Impressive, but again academic interest rather than a drink to look forward to. ****

  • 2003 Château Montrose 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Dense but vibrant deep ruby. Blackberry and bramble nose. Less dense and gloopy than the other two. This has more of a dryness than the others, similar to that that it showed four years ago, but perhaps a little more pronounced now and with a little less fruit to cover it fully. Again, heading towards being one to sniff rather than sip. ***

Flight 6 (1 Note)

  • 2003 Château Rieussec 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

A wine whose star has waned over the past decade. Once gloriously sweet, coconut creamy and guava and passion fruit rich with saffron botrytis, over the past six or seven years it has become a monotone barley sugar and slightly medicinal botrytis. This bottle no different and perhaps a step further down that path. Just a bit stolid and uninspiring. ***
