Introduction

This Friday was an opportunity to try a selection of wines from Kilikanoon from the Clare Valley - focus for me was on the Shiraz as the Clare tends to produce my favourite ripe style shiraz in Australia

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • NV Kilikanoon Vouvray Pétillant

France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray Pétillant

Aromas of candy floss, lemon, touch of yeasty bread notes. Crisp, aggressively foamy, mouth filling mousse, textured burr, slight yeasty notes, muted fruit despite touch of residual sugar

  • 2022 Kilikanoon Riesling Mort's Block

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale

Dusty, slightly baked earth, lime cordial, touch of slightly unripe green apple. Medium plus intensity acidity is sharp, lime notes with a touch of lime pith <shrugs>

  • 2014 Kilikanoon Riesling Mort's Reserve

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale

Slight cream, honey sits beneath lime and kerosene. Medium plus intensity acidity, those honey and cream notes are joined by a little bitterness but, again, these play 2nd fiddle to the lime and slight kerosene.

  • 2021 Kilikanoon Killerman's Run Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Pretty, slightly jubey strawberry fruit backed by a little peppery spice and plum, slight alcohol prickle. Juicy, fleshy fruit, a little reticent on the palate, floury textured tannins, slight non-intrusive alcohol warmth. Okay.

  • 2019 Kilikanoon Grenache Prodigal

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Slightly gamey and funky notes, jammy strawberry fruit, sweet spice. Juicy, slightly reductive, slightly jammy fruit drops away quickly. Meh

  • 2018 Kilikanoon Cabernet Sauvignon Blocks Road

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Jammy blackcurrant, slight herbaceous underpin, sweet spice and cream in support, touch of alcohol prickle. Juicy tending to medium plus intensity acidity, touch of bitterness, blackcurrant is equally ripe on the palate. Not my thing.

  • 2020 Kilikanoon Shiraz Killerman's Run

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Blackberry and cherry, sweet spice, slight alcohol warmth lends peppery spice, touch of plummy fruit in support. Juicy, thickly concentrated, black fruits are a little more savoury on the palate, muted tannic burr, fruit drops off quite quickly. Hmm.

  • 2018 Kilikanoon Shiraz Covenant

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Dense smelling, ripe black cherry, a little cream, vanilla, sweet spice, a touch of tarry thickness. Juicy, concentrated black carry, slightly drying tannic burr, non-intrusive alcohol warmth helps carry the finish. Reminds me of experiences with the 2001 and 2002, I think more time in the bottle will help.

  • 2016 Kilikanoon Shiraz Oracle

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

concentrated plummy black fruits, sweet spice, a little liquorice, alcohol lenes peppery spice, polished oak. Juicy, equally concentrated on the palate, alcohol warmth helps carry the finish, drying talc textured tannins persists long. Still showing very primary.

  • 2010 Kilikanoon Shiraz Killerman's Run

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

    Served blind.
Super ripe and concentrated, black hued fruit; plums; prunes, sweet spice, a little peppery note from the alcohol warmth. Juicy, ripe black fruits, slightly drying, chalky tannins, woof, bit of a beast.
I thought this might be an earlier vintage of the Oracle but without the oak weight...

Closing

That Killerman's 2010 was still showing primary, The covenant and the oracle were also quite nice.
