Intimate tasting organised by Wine&Whisky at La Terre before it is renovated. The main aim was to try the two Giacosas which were available for a good price from the list - one was outstanding but the other was slightly advanced. Old Italians can truly be a crapshoot with poor corks and questionable storage. Saw a Cedric Bouchard available for a good price so we took that too.
1999 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Similar to a 2001 that I tried previously at 67PM, this was a little advanced as well. Dull red colour with some bricking. Balsamic and soy notes dominated the palate, but still retained some semblance of structure and elegance.

1998 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 95 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Wow this was my best Giacosa so far. Unlike the 1999 that was a little dull, this had a brilliant hue of red with an intoxicating floral nose. Incredibly vibrant with dark red fruit, there was a superb depth and complexity to this wine. Loved the elegant texture, sensual but biting tannins that brought you back to Piedmont. So so refined, the Giacosa magic on full display here.

2011 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Cote de Bechalin 93 Points
France, Champagne
Probably one of the most open and giving Bouchards that I’ve had. I didn’t like the 2011 LHL as that was a little lean and imprecise, but this had a good balance between citrus and exotic fruit. These need a lot of time to fully express themselves and this was in a good place, being more pleasurable than intellectual.

2016 Renaud Bruyère & Adeline Houillon Arbois Les Tourillons 90 Points
France, Jura, Arbois
Really quite funky - dominated by a kombucha note that everyone picked up along with a cloudy sensation. Others hated this but I was more forgiving since it wasn’t overtly flawed but still not quite up my alley.

2012 Gravner Breg Anfora 90 Points
Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
Not quite my style at the beginning with the overt oxidative notes and 16% alcohol. Became marginally better with air as it tightened up to give a more coherent impression. Nice tropical fruit, some orange peel and a distinct ginger note.

1995 Robert Ampeau & Fils Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Dark, earthy red fruit with some smoky and cola notes. Guessed 2005 old-school CdB as it showed some maturity, yet tasted so young so I thought this was a product of the vintage. Was surprised to discover that it was even older, guess that’s the benefit of having enough sulphur in your wines to kill a horse.
