Little long weekend tour with Tim and Phil to head down to Beechworth. Commenced at 7ish on Thursday morning and hit the road. Down to Beechworth with a stop off in Canberra district with two wineries
First stop at Canberra. Nice cellar door, few nice wines.
I'm a big fan of Eden Road so it was nice to quickly zip to the cellar door.
Lime, slightly green underpin, clean, simple. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity; sharp lime, a little spritz and plenty of textured grip proves slightly drying. Meh.

Fresh stone fruit, a little butter, touch of almost toasted nuts, tiny citrus underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, a little tough, touch of lees work, stone fruit plays second fiddle, textured burr from that lees work and oak. Medium plus length. Needs time to settle in the bottle. Okay

Pear, rock melon, slight musk, clean. Juicy, fleshy, textured burr, fruit a little muted on the palate showing a little melon. Touch of non intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.

Savoury, meaty, slightly reductive, surprisingly dark hued fruit, a little sour, slight whole bunch, herbaceous notes in support and a little sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, a little splash of black hued fruit, cherry, then tight but relatively silky textured tannins start to close down the palate, a little fruit persists beneath this finish with a touch of jubey prettiness. Opens with time to show more jubey red fruit on the nose. Okay

Incredible chaos at the Airbnb was finally alleviated and we had a lovely supper of about 3kg of beef on bone with accompanying vino
Peachy, a little citrus and butter, sweet spice from good quality oak, a little toasted note. Juicy ,fleshy, tends to medium plus intensity acidity, still quite youthful and there is a touch of hardness to the stone fruit sweet spice, a little tangy note, butter, textured toasty burr on the finish. Very good but will benefit from more time in the bottle

Very red berries; strawberry; a little raspberry, a touch of clay, sweet spice, savoury underpin with very slight wood glue. Juicy, red berry compote, slight concentrated, very slightly ashy whole bunch is more evident on the palate, soft tannic burr. Lovely, less interventionist stuff. Yum.

Quite reductive initially; a rubbery note that struggles to dissipate despite agitation and time, a little tomato leaf, touch of alcohol prickle and, behind these two aromas, hints of dark cherry. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, talc textured tannins, again dark cherry but more to the fore here, a little bitter on the finish, quite simple. Hmm.

Double decanted. Medium minus intensity aromas of blackcurrant, plum, sweet spice, a little red fruit underpin. Savoury, tight, chewy, slightly woody tannins, a touch of wet diluteness, muted black fruit. Medium length finish but all quite dialled back. Hmm

Double splash decanted. Blackcurrant fruit pops from the bottle, a little mint and eucalyptus, touch of salinity, oak here but well controlled and contained. Great Margaret River Cabernet nose. Medium plus intensity acidity, drying coarse flour textured tannins that prove more grape than wood derived and quite fruit saturated. Super fresh and still showing primary and young under screwcap despite the fairly aggressive double decant.

Double decanted. Medium minus intensity aromas of black hued fruits; blackcurrant; black berry; plum, very slightly reductive, a little sweet spice. Juicy, savoury dark fruit then plenty of firm grippy and grapey drying tannins, dark fruits translate to the palate but it's all oddly lightweight surprisingly. Hmm.

Muted Christmas cake, clove, cream, fig and walnut on the nose. Juicy, plenty of slightly chalky and woody tannins, liquorice. It feels a touch tired and flat on the palate to me. Damn.

2013 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier
Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
Popped and poured. Slight rubbery reductiveness initially. With a good vigorous shake it shows blackberries, sweet spice, touch of savoury meatiness and black pepper. Medium plus intensity acidity, chalky/woody tannins prove slightly drying, aa little red fruit joins the blackberry, finishes quite savoury and a little hard - air will help - slight non-intrusive alcohol warmth.
